However, I think at some point the Chinese government did decide that polluting the substance of the what they were calling the "Treasure of China" to prevent civil uprisings wasn't a good idea. So today their policy seems more acceptable of people teaching/sharing whatever they want in h...

Good Manual. Janich's, "Human Response Dummy", a take-off on Kelly Worden's "Silent Fighter" design is worth the price of the book.

Leaving aside the technical questions about similiarities/differences between the styles, I am intriqued by the notion that someone was actually trained in "shaolin temple" by a "shaolin monk." Man, did he find a way into some boondock-nook-in-a-mountain temple that somehow elude...

Barry, I think folks train with different goals and an individual's goal can and do change over time. Nothing is static. I think your original post and quote may be misleading folks to think their MA practice has to be very specific and focused all the time. It really is not what Weiman is proposing...

Tony,

I believe Enshin is a deriviative from Koshinkai. The Enshin Kancho came from that lineage. If i am not only off in my memory, I believe he was one the guys in the "Black Fighting Kings." Hmmm.... May have to go back and review the video though.

First of all, I think Weiman's book belongs in any good MA library. His book will make sense of Roy Bedard's "quarter second punch." Regarding the specific post, it's entirely true that training in a specific sport will produce better results in that "sport" than general cross tr...

Don't give in to self doubt. Don't be lulled by overconfidence.

A BB means only what you want it to mean.

Fred, My current ride is a "Greenland Style" low volume boat -- 17.5' length and 20" beam, a hull depth of about 7", and an "ocean cockpit" of 16"x20". You have to squeeze into this baby and know you're not going to wet exit in rough conditions. If one wet exi...

I've been maintaining my training with two or three workouts a week and supplementing with sea kayaking. Post thanksgiving day, went out with a group in building storm conditions. Some over-confident kid (who didn't tell anyone he was a newbie) went literally over his head in "conditions" ...

Gene, Any competent stitcher can make you a good fitting gi with the material you want. Just take your favorite gi along and the stitcher can take a pattern off it with whatever modifications required and get it done in less that half a day if s/he is so inclined. When I was 12 and first started kar...

I was cleaning the basement and found my "yellow cover" book that I got when I first started at Hancock St. It's got some soot stains but in good shape otherwise. Guess I'll just have GEM sign and back date it and then it's off to EBAY where bidding starts at.... $500. (Mha,hahahaha ---- D...

In the rush to get holiday gifts, we often forget to truly "extend" ourselves -- to truly give/share from a place where the "self" doesn't exist.

Thanks for the reminder. I wish you and others the blessings of family and friends.

In any martial art, you'll find a small to moderate contingent that will push themselves and the envelope. Cool... But not for everyone. "Full contact" who defines the approach? "Mas Oyama style" seems hard core to some, but it has some "rules" that are moderate in appr...

Cross Cultural Mist

Vicky talks about the uniform of kendo, a distinctly Japanese art as opposed to karate which in Okinawa has its roots in China. The cultures have and economic class have a lot to do with clothing selection. The Japanese arts (old style) generally avoided white and are dark colors instead. The hakama...
