Re: My thoughts on Blocking

I agree. The hands must come up in the 'fence' as we see here http://www.urbancombatives.com/janws2_files/image039.jpg Another good habit to ingrain is to try to establish distance between you and a potential attacker once you sense a fight may be coming on, unless you decide to move in and hit him...

Re: My thoughts on Blocking

That video is quite a wake-up call. I think it emphasizes the need for verbal de-escalation and a good defensive posture, preferably with hands up in your face. Trying to talk someone while keeping your hands above your waist might have prevented some of the attacks. Regardless, it shows how vulnera...

Re: forum to date-Art's Lessons

I've been playing with the idea of popping a quick 3 or 4 minute lesson onto my forum. The majority of the lesson matter will concern Uechi Ryu. I've posted quite a few short videos thus far. There will be lessons on general martial arts material as well. However, since I am a teacher of Uechi Ryu ...

Re: The talk

Interesting discussion, particularly in the post UFC, MMA, world of the martial arts. I, like many here, have been practicing long before the UFC came along. Karate has denigrated into a children's activity, practiced by cute little kids in their jammies. Too bad, as we all know it is far more than ...

Re: forum to date

I'd be interested in how you train bunkai. i know we all study the formalized bunkai of our teachers and the varied uechi association but how do you train bunkai from the uechi kata?

I have found your you tube stuff very enlightening and a similar analysis of bunkai would be great.

Re: Boxing MMA Jiu Jitsu Judo

I agree with Sensei Roses comments, but how much of the boxer's superiority is from the way they train as opposed to the art or other factors? Boxing and their sparring is always all out, or at least close to that, and the partner is always non-cooperative.Full, all out training is certainly not for...

Re: forum to date

I am enjoying the practical applications of uechi on your site, especially the in close aspect of your teaching. What is your opinion on locks and takedowns? Do you teach or train those? What's your views on the practical applications of these?

Re: another level

Great post. As we age, we can be more efficient and better able to defend ourselves. Toe to toe, squared off fighting no, but self defense yes. There is a difference between sparring, sport, standing and trading shots and self defense.I used to cross train in small circle jujitsu and my teacher(who t...

Infighting in Self Defense

Hi Art, I found this video from Tony Blauer and his SPEAR system describing a self protection system that he's created. he describes many of the identical principles that you have described in your videos about infighting and utilizing sanchin principles. He, like you, and hopefully most of us who s...

Re: Power Infighting--The Beginning

What's your feelings on head butts? might sound like a dumb question, but I often feel in seisan bunkai that the double thrust(as in sanchin) that is done with the 2 attackers, kiai, and steering the attacker to the right is just begging for one. Also, I notice in your videos that when you work real...

Re: Health or self defense?

Whenever people talk about this stuff and why they do it, you rarely hear anyone talk about the real reason they do it. It is fun. I just got Rory Miller's new DVD on joint locks and I am looking forward to watch it and experiment with my girl. She never took any classes, but she loves Bruce Lee an...

Check out Joe Graziano's dojo in Milford. Student of Shinyu Gushi and Walter Mattson. By far your best bet given what you are looking for.

OK, there are a few holes in Rob's argument, but it's an interesting premise. So, how could karate be presented in today's martial market place in order to make it a relevant activity/art? If karate "arrived" today it would probably need to go beyond the way most of us learned it, i.e. we...

What's wrong with the junbi undo as a warm up? I've viewed a lot of joint mobility tapes and most that are out there are no better than junbi undo. Many of the so called experts on joint mobility have high priced dvds with a lot of fluff explaination and slow motion but they have nothing to offer th...
