My prayers and positive energy to Al's family in this time of sorrow. Although I never met the man, he was a great motivator for me. Stubbed toe? Rotator Cuff acting up? etc...when these thoughts and more were convincing me to take it easy, I would think, if Mr. Moulton can take years and years to f...

Hey all; And let's not forget those guys that compete in the strongman competitions. Their size alone...where do you hit them w/o pissing them off? Those guys flip cars, pull trucks, lift boulders, etc. while most of us could maybe push a car out of the snow w/ a few buddies and not get too winded o...

Hey all; I remember a time when you were either a Black Belt or you weren't. No questions about degrees, push-ups, etc. Nowadays, the BB has lost it's mystic. I had a buddy who boxed a round or two w/ a shodan and he told me....wow, if I was him, I wouldn't be telling people I was a BB...the guy cou...

My First Instructor is gone
He taught me from age 12 to 17, then moved out west. He passed on a few years ago but I just heard about it. Wish he could have see then man I became. I was a shy kid in a class of adults but he took a special liking to me and would look at me and touch his chin to remind me to hold my head high. Th...

Hey; I never was in the ring, but in kumite, whether in the dojo or in a tourney, I have a nasty side kick. I've worked it as long as I've been in karate. I used bags and kicking shields to develop it. Matter of fact, I would put a mattress against the wall behind buddy holding the shield and just b...

Hey there; I think in any rough sport w/ contact, there's implied consent to some risk of getting hurt. I don't think a clean check would negate this implied consent. Nor would a fight between two players that are game to drop the gloves and go at it. But this clearly crossed the line and in such ca...

Mr Castanet; Nice post. We should all be so lucky to step out of bounds. I also remember the first time our class did kata outside on a soft, half way even lawn. Another honest way of doing it is w/o the crisp, snappy gi and just in shorts and a tee. Then again, that was just kata. I used to spar ou...

Hey all; Yes, having family in the arts is a plus. My father started me off in his class was back that club folded and a year or two later, I joined another club/style and stuck with it. My daughter could count to 10 in our language, English, and Japanese when she was very young and I let her delevo...

One thing that I've found that increased my grip strength was cutting an old towel into strips and wrapping them around dumbbells and barbells when lifting. The fatter grip causes the smaller muscles to work harder and hence an increase in grip results, or at least I've found. Then w/ the increase i...

Ian; Thanks for the information on the cholesterol lowering drugs/diets and cramps. I'm also trying the diet approach, but I guess if I my diet was originally decent enough, I wouldn't be on the drugs, or at least not so high a dose. Then again, family history might be a factor as my father just had...

Sochin; Yes, my doc made me aware that the cholesterol pills might cause leg cramps and that is why at 80 mgs., he has my blood work checked regularly to make sure my liver is handling the high dose and that I was to stop immediately if I was getting leg cramps. I had no problems w/ the 40 mgs. and ...

Folks; Thanks for the advice. I should note that I wasn't clear on the doc's advice wrt the brown bagging it. I was talking to him about when I get antsy at times for no particualar reason, and sometimes for stress related reasons and feel that I can't breathe properly. I didn't mention to him yet a...

Thanks Ian; Yeah, I had meant lactate, not lactose. I read your original post about the liver and lactate and fixed upon the liver and statins since I am on a statins and lactate was in my mind, but I am more familiar with lactose term than lactate. At least I was close enough w/ the lactose for you...
