You're in Brownsville? Nice, I'm originally from Woodstock. I'm in MA now and no longer live in VT. If you are looking for someone to train with I highly recommend checking out the Budokai (http://www.budokai.us/) in WRJ. They're right above the Tip Top Cafe. Ron Treem is the Sensei there, he teache...

So let's be serious. Anyone have some good solo drills that don't involve much equipment?

Wow Neil! I thought I was the only one! I'm really glad someone else feels the same way I do. Guess we just have to keep training.

There was a thread on fightingarts.com about seisan and all of it's variations. I don't have the link off hand but it's very interesting.

Wow. That's really cool. As a long term allergy sufferer I would gladly down a glass of delicious intestinal worm eggs.

I thought that form had a bit of Goju in it.

I really like how they use Uechi principles though. So what if some of the moves aren't explicitly in the other forms? It doesn't matter, I think the principles were consistent and the techniques very Uechi.

To me, the "softening" of Uechi Ryu isn't an act of commission. It's one of omission. In other words it's all there in the kata, but we spend most of our time in kumite and bunkai working on basics. It takes a while to get this stuff... But once you learn the basics of human movement, the...

shokens

I was reading this http://www.shenmartialarts.com/blogger.html and they mention the use of shokens in SPM and tell you not to hit with the tip of the knuckle. I believe I heard something similar at summerfest about 3 years ago but I cannot remember who said it. What are people's thoughts on this? Al...

cdoucet,

That's interesting, I was taught the exact opposite: we started with the wauke and later added in the checking motion. I'm not a very strong person and discovered that I personally need that guide hand if a strong person punches at me.

Yesterday I was leading our club workout (I'm only a san kyu) and I had two students play with the various movements of kanshu. They each came up with a set of applications for the opening movements (up until the backfist), one even came up with a defense against a bear hug from behind. It was inter...

Are there any Uechi/karate pics/calligraphy/images around that are free to use on websites? I'm making a webpage for the Brandeis Uechi-ryu Karate Club and am looking for something to jazz up our site.

Thanks,
Jeremy

And what's the best way to employ that? How about that "posture" at the end of the front rising "elbow strike" in Seisan? Ever wonder why they make you put your hand in that ridiculous, by-the-head, hiraken posture? When I've showed my students how to get this whipping hi...
