The next best thing to the jars with more flexability in there use are the punch/block power trainer. Made out of aluminum and can be adjusted by just adding iron weights with the 1" hole in the center. They can handle up to 150# of weight each. They are a nagiri game/chi'ishi, and they are awe...

Bowling pin for the arms and legs. Also if you check out auto body tools they make a rubber hammer that is tear drop shaped which works pretty well. If you need a makiwara check this out, either to buy or get ideas for making your own.
