Historical tapes

Guys, Over the next week I will be selling many VHS tapes I have collected over the years for research that are no longer available. For you historians, many of these tapes are extremely rare and tie into the history of Uechi-ryu. They include kata and bunkai some some of Gokenki's katas (Happoren, ...

hammerfist/kick combo

Yes, I believe the techniques that you are referred to "cup and saucer" or "husband and wife" chamber position at the hip and then you pivot and hammerfist with upper hand while executing a front kick then follow by elbow to the palm of the striking hand. That correlates to the p...

Jiffa

Dana, The Jiffa kata is just a rearranged version of Kusanku-sho kata that was developed by Itosu Sensei, founder of Kobayashi Shorin-ryu lineage. I spoke with Gushi Sensei about this and showed him step by step photos of Chibana Sensei (Itosu's successor) taken in the 1950's doing this kata. The Ji...

Konan-ryu

I don't know that much about the Uechi-ryu derivative of Itozaku Sensei now passed down by Kinjo Sensei as Konan-ryu. I trained the other Konan-ryu, shorin-ryu lineage. We did do a version of Kinjo sensei's chizikun kata though. ALmost identical to his. I have no idea about the 2 longer kata. I don'...

Konan-ryu

Dana Shinshii, I am a student of Sensei Lostritto, and we have met twice before. I was a student of Konan-ryu, the shorin-ryu derivative, for several years under the VP in the US. It is the style of Hanshi Takaya Yabiku. He was a short time student of Hohan Soken, Takashi Kinjo, another Sensei Kinjo...

Seijun Kina

This is to Bronze Dago. I have been training Uechi-ryu for nearly 3 years, but have been training Matsumura Seito Shorin-ryu for over 7 years. My teacher trained with Hohan Soken, Seijun Kina's teacher. We have been trying to get into contact with Soken's Okinawan Students and their students to perh...

Books gone

I was just trying to help a seller find Uechi-ryu buyers as he often has to sell to non-Uechi-ryu folks suprising. I feel it is a shame that these rare sources of info are beinfg lost to people who do not train in ...

Uechi-ryu blue book

I have a copy of the big 1000+ page Uechi-ryu blue book written by Kanei UEchi and Takamiyagi. My friend finds copies every few years in Japan and sells them in the states to different karate collectors. I told him that it is a shame that these copies are not going to Uechi-ryu senseis considering t...

Cobra Strike

This technique was used by Kanbun Uechi but replaced by the crane break strike. It is still used in the Kojo family style of karate (perhaps Okinawa's oldest style). The hand is cupped with fingers straight like the downward beak strike in sanseryu. The middle finger crosses over the ring finger loc...

Jiffa kata source

Gushi Sensei learned jiffa kata from Uehara Sensei. This kata is identical to Kusanku sho kata from Kobayashi shorin-ryu whos founder Itosu Sensei (1813-1915) created Kusanku sho and Dai from the older kusanku kata. It is identical up to the turn to gedan barai with gyaku tsuki however, all the tech...
