I am late to the party, but for the last 18 years or so I have been practicing under instructors who were Dillmanites for a long time. He lost the respect of some of his top guys and Mr. Oyata and his people HATE him. Unfortunately, I think Mr. Dillman is more footnote than anything at this point. I...

An artistic creation, whatever the original motivation behind it, once released to the world, has a life of its own. Each will have meaning individual to the person having the interaction with it. Knowing the original creator's motivation is interesting and informative for some purposes, but hardly ...

Funny reminiscence. But it was about 1971-2 that I first met Ray Berry. He was my 6th-grade teacher. He did a presentation/demonstration on Karate for our class that forever demythologized it and yet made it all the more awesome. I was in college before I found a suitable sensei. . Of course,...

The kids all left for church and my wife and I revisited the beginning of the parenthood process  , then met them for lunch at Blue Mountain Brewery. Quite a good day.

Van,

As an old BMW guy (or a guy who used to be into old BMWs), I can vouch for the Dinan name. They have a LONG history in the BMW aftermarket and I have never heard anything negative.

I think when looking at the traditional kihon "blocks" one must remember the whole movement and not just the transition from the middle to the end. There is footwork involved also. If my memory serves, gedan barai means "downward sweep" or "low-level sweep." The term in...

I don't know what I would do. It seems a bit "over the top" for high school, but top-level competition demands commitment, I guess.

Is hypnotism effective? Is it even real?

"There is one part where a thin fellow is taking shots to the chest. That frankly is a bit dumb. Obviously someone who is directing that has never heard of commotio cordis . It's rare, but it happens. Around about that same time a UVa student was killed in an intramural lacrosse game (on namel...

Some follow-up fyi: She did tell me she has had some "low blood pressure issues." She can only do one forward roll before she is so dizzy she can't continue. I am not pushing her for info, but encouraging her to be mindful of "issues" which can manifest themselves during training...

Excellent points. I had immediately zoomed in on psychological issues. Physical conditioning would not SEEM to be an issue since she plays a lot of tennis and participates in other exercise classes offered at the club and has no trouble with the movements in a solo context. Plus, we are not into a v...

A new teacher with an interesting student issue...

Greetings to all, It has been some time since I have participated in discussion here, though I do lurk from time to time. I teach children's and adults' classes at a local sports club. My adult students are at a stage where we are beginning very basic contact with basic wrist grab escapes. One of my...

I find it interesting that the only person that did act was a 75 year old. A survivor of the Holocaust and communism. It's no conicidence. A professor of French had her students help her push desks in front of the door. Then she made them all get down on the floor in the back of the classroom. She ...
