:D :D :D (and more than a little 8O) Thanks for the well wishes all! Of course it will be his choice whether martial arts and Uechi-Ryu are in his future, but in one of the first pics I took of him I'm pretty sure he's practicing his double sanchin strikes... http://gakusei.ad.umuc.edu/aholberg/Levi...

Shana, The only decent study I found (in an admittedly brief search) that seemed relevant was The Effects of Tai Chi Chuan Relaxation and Exercise on Stress Responses and Well-Being: An Overview of Research from The International Journal of Stress Management in 2000. A reasonable survey of research ...

You might call to their attention that in that 'particular area' police is on the lookout for such infractions and the ticket is very expensive. This would most likely have the desired effect for the person to move... Canna Sensei, Funny you should mention this - almost exactly what happened a coup...

eric, Doesn't look like I'll be headed back to HI after all (DC instead). As far as I know there's no one there teaching Uechi. I had one student studying with me regularly when I was there a couple of years ago - I believe he moved away but if you're interested, PM me and I'll see if I can find his...

Maybe...

I should know in 2-3 weeks whether I'll be posted next in HI or DC. If the former, I'll be on Oahu for about three years and definitely intend to be teaching Uechi...

Realize this response comes a little late but... I was getting all set to respond point by point but I think this is better: http://www.snopes.com/medical/swineflu/prevent.asp Most important points? Use alcohol hand wash; most people don't do a good job of hand washing Don't touch your eyes, nose or...

Not so rare...

John, Not so rare at all; occult in the sense that the cause is still unknown... Not all that long ago, Fibromyalgia was dismissed by the medical establishment as essentially a manifestation of psychological problems/distress. More recently with better quality studies the data seems to point to some...

As previously promised, my article on the topic:

Thanks to Mattson Sensei for hosting it on his site (I was trying to figure out a way to keep the formatting from getting all jumbled and the footnotes lost...)

Canna Sensei, I really enjoy doing Dan Kumite and like segment number one (how dare you trample on my fun? ) Having said that, I think that it is the one sequence out of our yakusoku kumite more than any other that seems clearly designed for jiyu kumite training; the way one trades attacks whi...

I find something very beneficial and satisfying about full speed prearranged stuff due to having no gloves or protective gear on. I'd like to think that this kind of training has adaptability in the real world. -Josann Well if you do a weapons art then you really have to do co-operative drills .......

Sensei, Happy to post the article (unless posting it here means it doesn't go in the book - I was counting on those royalties :D ), unfortunately still in the field with no access to it. I should be back in about three days and can post it then. Bill, Ah, the "backing up in Uechi" issue......

Sorry for not posting before now – been on a field exercise just south of the DMZ here in Korea where I’m now stationed and where it is considerably less pleasant (and somewhat colder) than Hawaii for the past couple of weeks. The video linked at the beginning of the thread was not intended to stand...

Canna Sensei, QuikClot does in fact work well (in animal models and anecdotally from combat medics) at stopping hemorrhage. It's one of the 'miracle agents' that have been deployed in the past few years in Iraq and Afghanistan; the other major one being “HemCon.” QuickClot [QC] was developed in conj...
