Fallen Arch

Hi Robb, In the building I first trained in, I had the luck of a nice wooden floor (but I also simultaneously trained on a cement floor in the basement, and a hard tile floor at my sensei's other school). Then, due to a change of buildings, we ended up having to train only a tile floor. The only tim...

Moving Zen

I will give Amazon a try. David, if you could check the local book store, I would really appreciate it. I can check Amazon, but if you find something, I can always cancel the order easily. If you find anything, could you please tell me, and I will be glad to send you whatever you need to get it for ...

Moving Zen

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could look to find a copy of C.W. Nicol's book, "Moving Zen: Karate as a Way to Gentleness." I think his most recent edition is out of print. I have been searching all around, but am not having any luck.

Thanks.

Women in Japanese Culture

Sensei Mattson, I have been away from the computer for a few days, as I'm home for spring break, but I wanted to thank you for bringing up this topic. I found it very interesting to think about, and it gave me a chance to evaluate and think about areas that I hadn't yet given much thought. Thanks Ag...

Bowing in the Dojo

Hi Everyone,

I appreciate the input on the bowing issue. I believe that some interesting points were and good solutions suggested. I will bring this information to my sensei, and if there are any further questions, I'll post them.

Thanks Again!

Women in Japanese Culture

Sensei Mattson, The story about your friend's daughter does sound somewhat familiar, in regards to videos I've seen and stories I've heard. I've never seen the video of the woman selling the big database to a man...hahaha. I find the Japanese culture interesting, I guess something worth pursuing stu...

Bowing in the Dojo

Mr. Thurston, "I believe that most Japanese and Chinese visitors understand that shaking hands is a western 'ritual' and originally out politeness and now, perhaps because many in the East have assimilated this custom, it may way be considered impolite not to bow AND shake hands." I think ...

Bowing in the Dojo

Sensei Moulton, They've been practicing for maybe about 12-14 years now. They have not had a problem bowing into class before or even to each other, but for some reason--according to them, a conflict with the commandment about bowing to idols--they feel it is against their religion to bow to the pic...

Bowing in the Dojo

It is quite interesting that the most recent post on bowing should come up at this time. I was talking to my instructor today, and a very interesting problem has come up for him as a teacher, and we were wondering if anyone has any input on the subject. As most of you know, I am a student of tradito...
