How Many Strikes Do You Do?

Hi Len, I've been taught that the originial form had 9 strikes (3 up, 3 back, 3 up). But a 4th strike was added by Kanei Uechi to equal a total of 12. But I have no sources to cite to back this up. It's just what I've been told. We do 12 strikes in our dojo. But I think in zen type beliefs 9 is a mo...

Since you're such a tough guy...

Jeff, I have had several conversations with dojo mates about these very topics. Most of the men I trained with and do train with are really great guys. But a lack of communication can change any interaction. All of my negative early experiences happened because there was not open communication -- be...

Female Training

I think of particular importance in Uechi-Ryu are the conditioning exercises. Women have much less muscle fiber than men -- and while we don't know the exact mechanisms of conditioning I think this has a lot to do with why women take longer, lots longer, to condition. I think women, more than men, n...

Since you're such a tough guy...

Again - wonderful, thoughtful responses all around. Yes - concrete answers are possible and something to be explored in a another thread (to be open very soon) <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote The truth is that most women deal with confrontations like this a...

Since you're such a tough guy...

Laird , Stryke, and David, thank you all for your responses. I appreciate your honesty. Part I A lot of the avoidance seems to come out of the idea of who can one train with in order to improve. In the mind of a young man looking to train martial arts -- better seems to mean faster, harder, stronger...

Since you're such a tough guy...

ATH mentioned in the other thread that there is a willingness to adapt what we teach in school for children but no same accomodations are to be made for women. Please note that I'm trying to be contrary here - what I'm going to say isn't sugar coated. That being said: I know mostly men read these fo...

Conditioning Exercises

Wild Amateur Speculation: The cell walls of the skin and capallaries (sp?) thicken to adapt to the shocking environment The muscle fibers go over the veins -- or conversly, the veins run down under into the muscle to hide from the shocks. Have you ever noticed that on the forearms of most uechi-cha ...

Chi and Bio-Electrical Energies

Shadowhands, A nice summation. As most on this forum will support - I am open to the idea of chi and many of its manifestations (my best friend is an acupuncturist and taught me a little about the concepts.) There is one concept you left out of your summation that is often a stumbling block for conv...

Right way - wrong way ?

Keiko "In the practice of Martial Arts, one must distinguish, and differentiate between training and practice. In japanese the word "renshu" is used for practice, which means to prepare or train the body; and "keiko", is the word used to define training, which means to train...

So what's going on inside your head?

You're doing kata, are you: visualizing an evil opponent and tearing them to shreds? keeping your mind still like a lake? (though I've never seen a perfectly still lake.) beating yourself up for not doing each thing perfectly? beating yourself up because that's the evil person attacking you? wonderi...

Free Forum software

I'm on another forum that runs off this software and IMHO it is very quick and has lots of nice options from a user end.
Even on a 56kbs modem. I have no idea what kind of headaches it offers for the hosts.

The Principles learned from KYU KUMITE

Very nice. I think a couple of additional principles that can be emphasized, once the students get the moves down, are the ideas of sensing and listening to the aggressor. By this I mean waiting for proper timing in moving back and avoiding attacks. Once the first attack is avoided, using the awaren...

Plantar Warts ??

I've not done it but a woman in my office used a homeopathy remedy on her daughter. She said the warts came right out after about 3 days with their roots trailing. (yick). Anyway, if there's a whole foods market or a fresh fields or a homeopathic doctor you can get to it may be an option. I've never...
