Te name for the Late Roman armored heavy cavalry as used in the East was "clibanarius". This term derived from the name of a small oven, the "clibanion" that was commonly used throughout the Empire. If you were one of those heavily armored troopers campaigning in the deserts of t...

Whatever floats your boat, Fred. I am not a great fan of the Japanese sword arts or of their bladed weapons. Oh, I appreciate them for their fine workmanship and, in some cases, for their beauty, but I am much more taken with Western Sword Arts, especially the swords and seaxes of the Migration Era.

John, thank you for the help, but none of the items that you post will work. The Germanbu helmet is very strictly a Viking item and I already have a conical nasal helm based upon the Wenceslas helm in Prague that works for all late Migration Era types, Anglo-Saxon, Nprman, & Viking as all of the...

Yes, I am seeking a reproduction. The only repros that I have found are made in Australia and the shipping is a killer. So, if you have anyone in the Mid-Atlantic area who might be able to help me, I would appreciate it.

Wanted: A Migration Era or Very Late Roman Spangenhelm

As the caption says, I am seeking a Migration Era or very Late Roman spangenhelm. My head is ca. 24.5" around and ca. 9" long by 7" wide. I am not too particular about style, but would ideally like one like the Ostrogothic Spangenhelms with the copper or bronze frames and iron spangen...

Regarding that friction folder, the one made from a deer's antler tine, it is the only one of my rather large collection of sharp and pointy things that my wife calls "beautiful." That is because she really likes the carving on the antler tine. For me, it is the carving on the hilt of the ...

Here are links to pictures of the Tinker work that I have. The seax, which Tinker calls a "Hand Sax," is about 2/3 of the way down the page at http://www.tinkerswords.com/knifearch.html The cinquedea is the second item down on http://www.tinkerswords.com/Daggers.html While the Vendetta Cor...

I like his coffin hilted Bowie. That is a very nicely done version of an American classic.

A Website for You All to Drool Over

I have become very much attached to the work of Michael "Tinker" Pearce out near Seattle, WA. He is a master swordsmith and does great things with steel but what I admire most is his wood carving work on the hilts. I now have four of his pieces, a friction folder made from a deer antler ti...

A Forum Just for John

John, over at SwordForums, there is a forum entitled "Home Improvements" Projects that would seem right down your alley. It is devoted to efforts by folks to make improvements to their inexpensive swords, in other words, to turn sows' ears into silk purses. You should take a look. http://f...

I'm sorry but as much history as the Garand bayonet represents, it just does nothing for me. But Bowies sure as heck do!

Version 2 of the Musso Bowie Replica is Coming.

After much discussion and thought, Clyde Hollis of Imperial Weapons has decided to bring out a Version 2 of the Musso Bowie. The Version 1 was the first of his efforts at making reproductions of historical Bowie knives. It was a massive knife with a 1/4" thick blade that was 11 3/4" long a...

I would only note that the only enforcement of any of these acts was against newspaper editors who supported Jefferson's Republicans.

If I remember my history correctly, his support for the Alien and Sedition Acts were probably the biggest factors in his loss. They really angered the populace, and rightly so.

I don't get HBO so I haven't seen it but I understand that the show has whitewashed John Adams' rather testy nature and his famous temper tantrums. These are what led to his pushing for the Alien and Sedition Acts and what led to his having but one term as president.
