mini tourney??? for fun and training.

"We need more interdojo training sessions, where people can train together and learn both the positive and negative implications of a particular sport. In other words... the rules. Once enough students become familiar with the rules and comfortable enough with the idea of competing, they will p...

mini tourney??? for fun and training.

It would be great to see more young Uechi people getting involved with the type of fighting/training that Joe Pomfret, Jim Deluca and the likes do. Lots of Uechi dojo now are incorporating new aspects into their training curriculums such as ground work... what do guys think about a training tourney?...

bare knuckle sparring

truth of the matter is that you need both. Gloveless is excellent for all around 'feel', grabbing, takedowns, working from standing up to the ground etc.. however gloveless you have to pull punches to some extent. gloveless you don't get a chance to 'follow up' after a good hit i.e see your partners...

Lurking...at a Dojo!

"Uechi ryu - while it shares much with Wing Chun on the "infighting" dimension - is actually intentionally vague on specifics. Different people will interpret the very basic principles in different ways, depending upon the abilities and biases that they bring to the table." yup. ...

Fees

What Mr. Mattson says is right on the money!!! The average cost across the country for tuition is approximately $1200 per year (last time I heard) not counting hidden fees. Most use contracts. The 'smaller' more personal schools (I term them profesional vs. commercial. not implying that a commercial...

Conditioning Exercises

I actually took part in a bone density study. One of my students (bone dr.) got me into the study because he was curious about conditioning. They MRI'ed everyone and tried to come up with some conclusions.. I kinda get why we can condition the way we do but I really can't understand why we don't bru...

School management software?

look in the trade mags and ask other dojo owners. There are plenty of packages out there that are written by professional, that are supported and maintained. The price points range from $200 (approximately) up. You can run the invoicing and accounting portions of your dojo with off the shelf softwar...

One up/One down

Afternoon, I posted this on another thread also. Being an absolute baby-san in grappling, the key thing that I am taking out of it now is knowing what to expect! Even if I can't perform the techniques I can recognize them and possibly spoil them. That is a huge win for me. As I get better I get more...

Strength Training - Kami and Chishi

yup, that's exactly correct. we use the rail cut down and painted. the grip used to hold the rail portion is pretty much close to correct. you can do the 'sanchin stepping' with the rails. You can hold them and practice punches, circular blocks ... whatever. Don't use the rails as much as I did when...

Could Grappling/Wrestling be the best?

Have to go with Victor on this one, the NFL!! Seriously, the big advantage that JJ, boxing, wrestling has over karate is training. There is no place to hide in a boxing ring.. Those that stay get tough period. We in karate have to many rituals, ranks and foo foo dust to hide behind. Train in Karate ...

NO COWBOYS WANTED 'ROUND HERE

so how about it? LeeDarrow hit it right on the head. Has there been any legal challenge to MA laws? why not? where is the ACLU now? They are the first to step up and protect the rights of Nazi groups to speak... so where are they now? Is there any legal recourse? Civil rights violation? Has GOAL cha...

finishes from side mount

thanks for the replies.. I can sometimes get the keylock.. having troubles with the choke, seems I lose my base or something and end up having to re-establish it.. what do you folks think about moving from side mount to say scarf hold or north/south.. I generally go north/south (since I can't ever s...
