Welcome back to the Forums, Crystal! Your perspective is always appreciated.

A birdie tells me you're going back to school and wish to use our online playpen to sharpen your writing skills. Covey would be proud of you (see post below). Write away. "The Natives" will comment when you tickle their interests. Oh... and I don't avoid controversies, so long as everyone is fair and factual.
Crystal S. McKinney wrote: Portion control is also important. You will find when eating healthier, you actually will crave less and do not need the average American sized portions.
One big reason - as articulated by Lustig - is the presence of fiber in whole food and its absence in processed foods and juices.

As second reason is the food industry's substitution of sugar/HFCF/fructose for fat, when healthy fat absolutely should be part of your diet. We need nut oils, some plant oils (especially olive oil), and fish oils. In addition to helping the lipid profile, they also give us satiety. Pulling all the fat out of our diet and substituting sugar has been shown to have disastrous consequences.

And finally... increased salt intake can be a villain if it causes someone to drink sugary drinks. Soda companies in fact put salt in their products so you'll get thirsty and drink more of their bubbly sugar water. Meanwhile the hunger suppression hormone leptin is never called upon to stop you from consuming more. The leptin production system is mostly blind to sugar and the high fructose corn syrup hidden in most processed food.
