Two animal kung fu

Post by fivedragons »

Animals train and practice martial arts.

These are my ferrets, which are a domesticated sub-species of the polecat. They are playing, and learning skills. If they were hunting, things would be a little different.

Animal "play" is often practice for hunting prey.

I don't practice Indonesian martial arts, but they have this wonderful way of putting things in perspective. There is the "flower" and then there is the "fruit". The flower would be the dances with deceptively flowery and benign movements, while the fruit would be the application of the art.

The flower is a way to separate the movement from application in order to learn and progress in terms of things like flow and body mechanics. The fruit is where you bring the attributes of the flower into application.

In the kung fu san soo I am starting to learn, the flower would be the hand forms, as an example. The fruit would be the two-person forms.

Here is a clip about black-footed ferrets, which are indigenous to North America. If you go to 0:15 and watch to about 0:25, you can see kind of a funny "fruit", as opposed to the "flower" that is demonstrated by my domestic ferrets.

It occurs to me that when I was starting out, I did not know the flower from the fruit.
