Well, Mike-sensei, you're on, brother!

Couldn't have picked a better man!

Anything that I can do to help, I will happily do. Just call.

Looking forward to the next one. . .and the next. . .and the next. . .and the next...

Next Regional Workout!

To all:

Yes, it is true. I have volunteered my services to host the next regional workout. And, by-the-way, I also consider it an honor and hope that I can do as good a job as Rose sensei.

My plan is to have it in October so to give people time to absorb the Summer Camp and to prep for the Regional test in November. It also doesn't get into the holidays (which is good for all of us so my wife says). Anyway, I already have the support of the Town of Abington's Park and Rec. director, which means, we should be able to get one of the school's gym without too much trouble. I just have to pick which Saturday or Sunday that is preferable. Any suggestions?

In addition, I think many of us would like to see this grow and continue to be something special so that as Gary states, we can build our own memories instead of riding on the coattails of our senseis'. Any suggestions to making this better than the last would be greatly appreciated. That means from White Belt to Black Belt. As a matter of fact, I have already heard from several people that it may be better to break up the kata groups a little bit more so that people can get more out of it at their own level. What do you think? I would also like to see Bunkai done if possible given the time limitations and all (I can't help it, bunkai is in my soul). But we can only do what we can do.

Another suggestion is to invite guest instructors (just like the VA people) if they would like to come up. I would certainly go ahead and make a few calls and send the invites if people wanted me to.

Anyway, the next Regional Workout will be in southern MA, so keep your October free and as soon as I set up a date, everyone will know. It will be set up (hopefully) by Summer Camp. Hope to see you all there!!!

Mike

I received this e-mail from Tracy Rose yesterday. He asked me to distribute it in the 'mailbag' and other web features. GEM

Good Morning Mr. Mattson,

I would like to thank you, Sensei Canna, all the instructors and students for creating a memory for all. By all accounts the workout was a success and so far has met it's goals. I would like to remind people to follow through and go visit each other, complete that final goal. As stated at the workout, no one can get strong at this alone and no dojo get strong by it's self, we need each other. We must continue building on the foundation our seniors have created. What a great time to be studying Uechi-ryu!! You could feel the electricity in the gym. Many
people volunteered to host the next NE Regional Workout. There are good points to having the Workout in the same place but the arguements for moving about are far stronger. I would like to pass the baton on to Sensei Mike Murphy to hold the next NE Regional Workout on the south shore.

Thank You All, the credit goes all who participated!!

Mike-sensei:

Let's brainstorm, brother!

We're doing every student of Uechi-ryu a serious disservice if we don't learn from each regional event and improve upon it!

What was missing? Who left dissatisfied? Anyone? Everyone?

I know those of us in the back couldn't hear, see or keep up with the pace of the Black Belts up front. I KNOW the next workout will be bigger. . .What should we do?

Also, I'm not so sure we need guest instructors, but I would LOVE to leave the "flavor" of each event up to its coordinators! Hell, if you're the "bunkai guy", let's Bunkai, BOSS!!

Maybe when I host one it'll be all sparring and self-defense! Someone could do an all kata event, or an "alternative arts" exchange or something.

Behind it all, however, I know we'll find 1 or 2 hundred hard-working people dying to do Sanchin!

I'm with you, pal! Let's talk!

Gary-san,

I agree that volume was a problem in such a place as a gym. Maybe we can split up the gym and run the exercises and Sanchin separately, but together so that everyone is on the same page. The gyms are certainly big enough to do this if we want. Suggestions??

As for the guest instructors, I was thinking more on the line of someone from a different region that we don't get to see that often. If that is not desirable, then I agree that that each workout (being only two hours or so) should try to emphasize something in its own way (i.e. kata, body-conditioning, bunkai, kumite, sparring, etc.,). I will definately try to emphasize bunkai at this workout (exercises, sanchin, body-conditioning, bunkai). I still would welcome any suggestions to this.

Keep it coming!!!! A date is on the horizon!!!!!

Yours in budo,

Mike
