One Man

Over years a tree’s roots plunge deeper into the soil.
In this way, you’ve reached far into my soul.
Best told in 29 days, not 1, I’ll share with you
The richness of your character as it grows in another’s life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tenderly you brought me out from behind a wall I’d built.
Softly you caressed my face and showed me a man to trust.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A tree with roots planted firmly in the ground bends freely
through the air, casting a fanciful silhouette against the earth.
You led me closely next to you along the ocean cliff,
my silk dress flowing in the summer wind. Time had stopped
While you told me your fondest stories and asked for mine.
Though words at first were slow to come, patiently you listened.
I felt free to share more knowing you heard me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Understanding and being understood, we sit across the small
Café table, rain streaming down the outside of the window.
Look…look away… turn to speak…nothing to say.
Your hand holding my arm, our eyes telling more than words
Could spell. We melt into our honest, silent understanding.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How exhilarating this night that begins a new branch of my life.
You poured forth wisdom and encouragement like sunlight that
Nourished my mind and now pacifies my insecurities.
Though you’re not by my side, you’re within my smile as the
plan unfolds.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A night intoxicated by your scent, watching people mingle beneath
the canopy of autumn trees. We mused at what brought them to the
patio below. Remembering nights of elegance and glamour, we wished
for nothing in the place of our oasis.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This beautiful creature moves effortlessly into my hand, as though it's hers.
I pet her pure white coat, she has what she wants and won't leave. I am her,
when you touch my neck that way. I cry like her for the finesse of one man
to move me as nothing else will.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I parted as soon as courtesy allowed tonight, no one can take the place you already have. It's like our Village life, simple and totally fulfilling.
Stories of what life was like in the Village, stopping in for fish, tea, anything at all.
My favorite was the small statue of the man and the woman holding tightly to
each other, forming a circular foundation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The city lights call from a distance but we’re not ready to leave.
Darkness pervades the lookout and creates a palette for stars overhead.
In your arms I begin to tell myself I should stop drinking so much. I’m
unstable and dizzy then realize tasting only your passion has stirred me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some sleep with feathers hung above their bed. I sleep with you inside
My head. I long not to catch the thoughts I dream, but to live the dreams we've painted.
