Thank you Rick, certainly one book that will help with the 'nightmare of the blade' that affects most of us when thinking engagement with an opponent/any opponent.
This book is a manual for the Knife Defence Course I taught at the Alberta Peace Officer's 2017 Annual Convention. It covers everything taught at that seminar and more.

Most knife attacks are knifings, which means they start up close and personal, and not from the distances usually displayed in movies.

Knifings are most often done with one arm trying to control you as the other weapon arm stabs in short repetitive strikes like a sewing machine. That is the assault we must prepare for. But just as when learning to hit a baseball we do not start hitting the major-league pitcher's 90 miles per hour fast ball we must start with easier attacks building the foundation, principles and skills to handle that fast ball.

This book presents a system that builds toward the end goal of being able to defend yourself against an all out brutal up close assault. It will outline how your tactics must match our strategy to achieve your goal of survival. Two sets of tactics will be provided based on the four strategies for survival: Escape, Distance and deploy/grab a weapon, disable, and control.

The way to use this book is to read and work through the drills beginning with assaults from a step away, then within arm's reach, then one foot away and finally the brutal sewing machine strike attacks.

The system offers techniques and ways to deal with the assaults but within those techniques are the underlying principles that make them work. Retain these and you increase your chances of survival

Thanks, Van.

Rory Miller was kind enough to write a foreword for the book.

Here it is:

Foreword

I’ve been waiting for this book for awhile. Well, maybe not this book. I’ve been waiting for Rick to get off his ass and write pretty much any book.

For every famous martial artist you’ve heard of, there are at least ten who are better that you’ve never heard of. These are the men and women who devote a lifetime of study to something they love. Some never teach. Some teach to a small group in their garage or basement. Or work out with friends in the park.

Rick Wilson is one of those guys.

His body mechanics are superb. He can explain the principles that underlie the technique you can’t quite figure out. And if you want a karate blackbelt from Rick, you will at some point get tossed into a storage container with two armored opponents.

Rick’s had a martial arts journey. He studied Uechi-ryu, a traditional Okinawan karate style. And he rejected it. Too old, not in line with modern knowledge, ridiculous. So he went off on his own, as deep into body mechanics as he could. Digging down to understand. And he came full circle. Back to Uechi. Back to tradition.

Remember, systems became traditions by not losing. By not getting wiped out. Somewhere at the root of every old system is a reason why it hasn’t disappeared. Too often the core is misunderstood or deliberately obscured. Or obscured because the instructor can hide his ignorance and misunderstanding. But the bones are there.

This is a manual for a course Rick developed for Canadian police. As such, it deals with one very dangerous problem — knife defense. If you’ve ever faced a blade, you know it’s a desperate #####’ problem. There are no sure answers. When you survive, mentally it’s because of your decision. Physically, it is because you were more efficient than the man with the better weapon. You used time, space and motion better than the guy who should have won.

In this very simple book about a very simple technique, Rick goes deep into what efficiency means. The principles that underlie everything that work are the same, whether we call the system ancient, classical, traditional or modern. And Rick understands and can explain those principles as well as anyone I know.

All there in a nutshell.

As a martial artist of any given style...you might reach a high proficiency level that is usually assumed and never really tested because it cannot be.

But that 'desperation factor' will always remain at the back of your mind, ready to surface at a moment's notice, when you suddenly realize the fight you thought to be and stay 'empty handed' ...has now become a sharp piece of steel stabbing and slashing through your 'great techniques' _

If you are in your right mind, you will order this book today and read it over and over...but more important...you will practice its techniques and concepts as part of your training routine.

Long time coming, thank you Rick.

Thanks again, Van.

What is presented in the book can be done by anyone of any style, or even by those without training (as long as they work through the book and practice).

It isn't style specific, but, having said that, those in Uechi Ryu should see that it comes from my roots.

They will easily see the Uechi in it and therefore take to it nicely.

It is designed for that close quarters moment when everything drops into chaos.

The following is a small look at where my new knife Defence book, “Watch Out For The Pointy End”, will take you.

There is a lot of learning to be done to get to this point, so that you understand and can execute all the principles required to action the techniques shown here.

The book will walk you step by step in a very logical progression of learning from the very basic attacks to the most dangerous knife attacks.

It is important to understand the clip shows the end result, the book is all about learning how to get there.

The book is the manual (and more) for the seminar I taught at the Alberta Peace Officer’s 2017 Annual Convention.

Great stuff, Rick...something we never learn when doing TMA, but have a tendency of assuming it will be there.

There is also something else to be considered about the knife that can be very debilitating as we have discussed before...to wit: the 'primal fear factor'

And I was wondering your take on it.

This is a good read....http://www.fightingarts.com/reading/article.php?id=2
