"Most EXCELLENT post - I intend to make it required reading for any upcoming instructors in my dojo. (Here that Tony-san?) "

Yes I did Sensei! J.D.'s posts are always grand. Did you notice he used the "flaccid" word? :-D

A note of caution for you ladies who hang with the guys for the after-workout-workout...

After my greenbelt (or was it brown belt?) test, we all went out to celebrate as usual. There was this one particular sempai of mine with whom I was slightly competitive, and he was a real smart a__ with his tricks and games that generally ticked a few people off and most especially ME. Well, when you are celebrating it's hard to remain antagonistic, and after a couple of drinks he and I were engaged in some of the most friendly conversation we had ever had! In a rare moment of purest comraderie, I confessed to him that I thought that the sanchin checks I received were not as hard as they could be given that I was a woman. STUPID STUPID STUPID!!! The next time he had the occasion to check me I think I felt his knuckle prints on the inside of my spine. When he was hitting from the front of course! Now before you gasp and condemn him for the cad that he really is let me tell you that I lived with no adverse affects, and I really did learn an important lesson! This was some years ago and he doesn't even work out any more, and now I am HIS senior and I can't WAIT for him to come back to the dojo - kind of like the "quitting karate" post on Sensei Bill's forum: he'll be back someday and I'm sure we will have some fun!

Just a story, for what it's worth.

Peace, Lori

Sanchin Checks on a Woman

Post by Lori »

An older but good thread from the pre-UBB forum days...

Brought forward because of the comments of men striking women brought up in the sparring thread.

(plus the signature Tony-san made for me back then was pretty cool - I may start using it again if I can find it!)

This is where co-ed instructors be useful. The women can Sanchin check women and the men Sanchin check only men.

I also think that it is important to have open communication between students and instructors about their preferences for sanchin checks. I also read here https://paribahisgiris-tr.com/ Some students may prefer to be checked by instructors of the same gender, while others may not have a preference. It is important to respect each student's individual needs and preferences.

Uechi-Ryu karate web has a great article on what consist of a proper sanchin check. The students, men and women, should understand the technique so they know they are being properly tested.
