Red Sox yes! Kerry no!

Post by Bill Glasheen »

Did you catch that comment in the debate Friday night? I'm still looking for the comment online somewhere. In commentary about Bush's programs, Kerry called it dreaming, like being a Red Sox fan.

EXCUUUUSSSEE MEEEE!

Forget Iraq. Forget ambulance-chasing trial attorneys. Forget healthcare. THIS is THE political issue.

This man - a Senator from Massachusettes, for Christ's sakes - throws out a pejorative to Red Sox fans? HIS home team?

Typical &*%$ &$#@ politician..

Watch him embrace the Bosox when they stomp the Yankees. But you heard it here first, folks. He trashed his homies last Friday. If the Bosox win, they don't need fans like him. Never let him forget the fact that he abandoned those around him BEFORE it was certain they would win.

- Bill

P.S. Lighten up, everyone!

Here it is. Kerry is responding to President Bush's comments on his accomplishments concerning the environment.
KERRY: Boy, to listen to that -- the president, I don't think, is living in a world of reality with respect to the environment.

Now, if you're a Red Sox fan, that's OK. But if you're a president, it's not.
- The Second Bush-Kerry Presidential Debate

There it is, Red Sox fans. Here is your spineless, fair-weathered, flip-flopping, weathervane-in-the-wind politico fan. As long as they are winning (during the week of the DNC), he wants to show up, shake hands, and be a part of it all. Whenever things get tough, suddenly he divorces himself from the faithful. Living in a fantasy world, we are, eh?

REMEMBER THIS!!!

When that slimebag shows up wanting to shake hands later, remind him of his comments. Senator from Massa-friggin-chusettes my a**.

Any true-blue fan of the Olde Towne Team knows that we have been bearing each others burdens when it comes to our trials and tribulations. The team's tantalizing flirtations with the brass ring, only to have them go unfilled is the stuff of legend.

What Sox fan doesn't wonder what would have happened if Frazee hadn't sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees?

What Sox fan doesn't wish Pesky hadn't held on to the ball?

What Sox fan doesn't wish The Kid hit better during the '46 series?

What Sox doesn't wish The Impossible Dream didn't last just one more game in 1967?

What Sox fan can forget Game 7 in 1975?

And if only they had won one more game than the Evil Empire did during the regular season in 1978....

...and maybe we all can envision in our minds Hoffman playing for Buckner late in Game 6 in 1986? Or maybe we can just wish that Buckner had kept his glove on the damn ground....

How 'bout The Rocket not winnning a post-season game while living in Framingham and working in Boston?

And let's not even mention He-Must-Not-Be-Named not pulling Pedro last year. What if that did happen?

I'd say John Kerry has the pulse of the long suffering Red Sox fan down pat...

You bet your a$$ the Senator from Massa-friggin-chusetts!!!

Ben

He's the man!

Gene
I'd say John Kerry has the pulse of the long suffering Red Sox fan down pat...
No, Gene, you have this wrong.

First, this is typical of his pattern of behavior

* He goes to Vietnam and gets assigned to a swiftboat, hoping to be just like the Real man pictured above. That's PT-109 JFK himself. It'll look good on his resume, after all, since it worked for JKF.

Then when things get tough in the war later on, he abandons ship and betrays soldiers being held captive in Hanoi. I believe the label Benedict Arnold has been thrown around. Whatever... Gotta change horses in midstream because this one isn't doing so well. We wouldn't want to tarnish our future political aspirations, now, would we?

Sorry, Kerry, you're no Jack Kennedy!

* He votes for the war in Iraq. Furthermore, he and his trial lawyer running mate appear on multiple newsprograms spewing bellicose language. Then when things get tough on the campaign trail (the anti-war governor of NH appears to be whooping his butt) he finds religion and decides he's against the war after all. Wrong war... you know the line.

* He shows up at a Bosox game just before the DNC, because the Sox are on a tear. He throws out the first pitch (which bounces, BTW). Oh and in case you didn't know, this Senator from Massachusettes had to be briefed on the personnel and records of the team before he showed up. Not exactly an informed fan of the state team, is he? Nevertheless, he gets his photo opportunity in Fenway.

Image

Here's an interesting description of the event that's been floating around online.
Kerry threw out the first pitch last night in Boston during the
Red Sox/Yankees ball game to Spec. Will Pumyea, 23, a military police
officer in the Massachusetts National Guard from Woburn, Mass., who
had just returned from Iraq and who also had previously served in
Afghanistan.
Kerry then watched the game from the owners' box with his wife, his
two daughters, Spec. Will Pumyea, former Sen. John Glenn of Ohio,
Red Sox owners John Henry and Tom Werner, and Katie Couric, the co-
anchor of NBC's "Today" show who is dating Werner. Glenn fought in
Korea with Ted Williams, the legendary Red Sox slugger.
Now.... The story behind the picture. The Boston Red Sox had
scheduled a returning solider from Iraq, Spec. Will Pumyea to throw
out the first pitch during their game with the New York Yankees last
night and watch the game from the owners box, until Senator John Kerry
decided to change his plans and appear at the game. Senator Kerry's
people decided he would throw out the first pitch and Spec. Will Pumyea
could catch the Senator's pitch.
Senator Kerry from halfway between the pitchers mound and home plate
threw the ball which bounced in the dirt and past the glove of Spec.
Pumyea.
Senator Kerry then proceeded to the owners box along with Spec. Pumyea
and their wives. Spec. Pumyea being honored at the game for all our
soldiers was allowed to stay in the owners box until the photo
opportunities
were completed.
At the end of one and a half innings Spec. Pumyea and his wife were
unceremoniously escorted from the owners box to the last row at the
top of the stadium while Senator Kerry and his guest enjoyed the game
in the owners box. I'm sure Spec. Pumyea felt honored.

What a way to honor our military.

And then just when the Bosox have to face the legendary men in pinstripes for a difficult ALCS, this is what he says.
KERRY: Boy, to listen to that -- the president, I don't think, is living in a world of reality with respect to the environment.

Now, if you're a Red Sox fan, that's OK. But if you're a president, it's not.
And then YOU come along and defend him. Which state do you live in, Gene?

I'll tell you what... If the Red Sox lose to the Yankees, you and Scotty can have your fun. (I respect Scotty, because at least he's a loyal fan. Scotty can trash talk all he wants.) But I'll tell you this. Don't either you or Kerry get anywhere near Fenway and my boys when/if they win. You have shown yourself not worthy.

To start with, anyone with a brain can figure out that each year starts with a new team. The Yankees cannot win on the reputation of ballplayers pushing daiseys. Every team and every player has to go out there every day and EARN their victories. This Yankee team actually got whooped by the Bosox in the regular season. They have their work cut out for them.

Furthermore, this world doesn't need politicians or sports fans with the spines of jelleyfish. You pick a political position because it is right and NOT because it is popular or the majority opinion. And you root for your team because they are YOUR team, and not because you think they might win this year.

Stay home Kerry. Stay home, Gene.

Go BOSOX!!!
You bet your a$$ the Senator from Massa-friggin-chusetts!!!
I am thrilled he is serving your needs, Gene. In your honor, I'll be sure to do my part to help him keep his job. 8)

Red Sox

Don't know if anyone here reads columnist Bill Simmons on ESPN.com, but a reader of his once wrote in and said:

"Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for the house in blackjack."

Given your proximity, I invite you personally to give me crap when/if the Yankees win. But they'd better win...because I'm not going to be a "nice" fan.

Dick Vitale predicted the Yankees in six. But then Dickie V has quite the New York accent, now, doesn't he? ;)

Damn straight he's the man.....

No, Bill, you have this wrong.
  • He goes to Vietnam, fights valiantly and is commended by the Navy, the Comammanding Officers and the men under his command as havng done so.

He returns home and when asked he speaks his mind in front of the US Congress. And he's not the only Vietnam veteran to have spoken out in opposition to that war.
  • He votes for the war in Iraq because the President and his administration lied to Congress, the UN and the American people as to the reasons behind the war. Post-invasion analysis shows this to be true. As it turns out this is the wrong war under the wrong reasons in the wrong country. But yeah...I know the line.
  • He shows up at a Bosox game because they are doing well, the DNC is about to start and the team is going to be away for the rest of the week. SO he bounces the first pitch. Big deal. He;s had recent shoulder surgery and we;ve already talked about this. Put the president on a pair of skis or a snowboard. Put the President on the soccer pitch. Put the President on a motorcycle, or a pair of ice skates. We'd be lucky if the man doesn't kill himself.

And it was a good photo op. Every politician running for office needs theirs, right?

    Image

How many NASCAR drivers can the President name, and their stats, hmmm?
  • I live in Massachusetts, Bill and have been a fan of the Olde Towne Team since my Godmother-Aunt took my brother and I to my first game when I was 7. This even when I lived in Alexandria, VA and followed the Orioles. Not that I need to justify what baseball team I follow to the likes of you.
  • If the Sox loose to the Yankees Scott will have have his fun on the both of us. But considering as I live but a scant 30 minutes away from Fenway, will practically be at Ground Zero when they win it all this year, you can be rest assured that I have absolutely no intention of coming anywhere near you or your boys for any reason that I can think of any time in the future. Not to worry. Stay home in Virginia Bill and enjoy the games ....500 miles away.
The Sox won the season series against the Yankees this year, but the Bronx Bombers won the division and finished with a better record. I like our chances, no doubt. However the Yankees are the defending AL Champions, and we need to knock out the champ. Anyone with a brain can figure that out.

Furthermore, this world doesn't need politicians or sports fans who are arrogant in their decisions and who wish to pander to the most divisive among us.

Kerry for President! 8)

Go BOSOX!

What is the source of that blurb about Spec. Will Pumyea?

I can't find it on the Snopes Website, nor their What's New page.

It isn't on their Various items about Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts and Teresa Heinz Kerry page, nor when one does a search for "Pumyea" "first pitch" or "Red Sox.

Nor is it on their page of listings for military legends or for Sports.

Just more right-wing horsesh!t.

Gene said: "He goes to Vietnam, fights valiantly and is commended by the Navy, the Comammanding Officers and the men under his command as havng done so."

Oh?

The reality is: " The Kerry campaign featured the photograph in an advertisement released in May titled Lifetime. Swift Vets and POWs for Truth has contacted surviving members of this group to find out how many actually support John Kerry, and discovered that of 19 Swift boat skippers pictured other than Kerry, 12 consider him unfit, 2 are neutral, two have died, and 3 now support Kerry. Four other officers were not present for the photo session; 3 oppose Kerry and one is neutral."

This refers to the photo of 19 of Kerry's fellow officers in cCoastal Division 11 used in the Kerry campaign.

They have responded as follows:

"On June 1, 2004, Swift Vets and POWs for Truth (then named Swift Boat Veterans for Truth) sent a cease and desist letter to John Kerry for President, Inc. on behalf of 11 officers shown in the photograph, pointing out that using their images in a campaign advertisement "wrongfully and incorrectly suggests their present endorsement of his candidacy."

How do you explain this Gene?

Bill and gang,

Bill, you ought to be a politician. You take some facts and bend it around to make the conservative arguement and systematically dismiss the use of the same on the other side. You should know that everytime you go on your Hitler Youth rallying cry of the Bush campaign (i.e. Bush and the puppet holder Cheney) by denagrating the Democrats (i.e. Kerry and Edwards), that the facts don't change, only how you use them.

We could get into a debate of the issues and how Bush says this and Kerry says that, or even a talk on their respective histories where Kerry served his country and Bush got the easy ride out (sorry, had to say that), but I simply want to comment on the Red Sox comment. As a life-long fan of the Sox, from a family of life-long fans, what Kerry said was absolutely true. We are all dreamers, and anyone from the Boston area, or any Sox fan in the country would know this. We have to dream because we haven't won the damn thing since 1918. Now I know you call yourself a fan, but I would have to question your "fanship" if you thought that comment was wrong.

I'll leave the next salvo up to you (I know you won't be able to resist) ;-), but I'll be waiting!

BTW Gene, Buckner usually was replaced in the later innings by Stapleton, not Hoffman. Just wanted to clear that up.

Rich,

I don't have an answer to the question you post Gene other than, I guess you would have to ask all his comrads who stood on the podium with him at the DNC. They would probably have a better answer than the group you mentioned, since they were there and served with Kerry directly. It really is a dead issue.

For a guy who seems confident with his facts, you sure had a hard time finding that reference, Gene.

It is here, complete with commentary.

Obviously you don't even know your own candidate. Let me quote him.
I mean, seriously -- labels don't mean anything.

We aren't being very Kerry-like, now, are we? ;)

With fans like you guys and Kerry, who needs the Yankees?

I stand by my comments. Every team is a new team, and you root for your team regardless. I'm not bending over and grabbing my ankles for every Tom, Dick, and Harry Yankee team that thinks they are entitled. They'll have to earn it, and this fan is in the way. No waivering.
