double thrust power

I am still finding questions from 6 years ago. Please remember, I just turned a computer on 4 months ago. Here is a question by Maxwell Ainley from England. He asks about double thrusts and why more isn't brought up about them. That is a good observation Max. The opening of sanchin kata contains this powerful double arm thrust. I use it every day . If done daily, it will show you where the power base is. You will begin to feel it. It is a great infighting strike. It comes out of nowhere and hits with a hugh bang. Check it out on my web site ------www.artrabesauechiryu.com --------click on the striking section of the uechi ryu wheel. Then click on the "striking drills sanchin opening" -----This drill helps you to be able to explode from a stationary position. One of my favorites. Hope this helps. ---------Happy Trails --------- Art Rabesa

Great move. We also find it in seisan and we put it to work in the Bunkai app. as a general concept of use.

You're right Van, it is a great move. If this double arm thrust is carefully looked at, the power base can be discovered. It uses all the large muscle groups to propel the arms. While stationary, this strike really packs an explosion. It hits even harder when moving in. I use it as my secret power drill. It gives me the feeling I want in my training. I quess it is no longer a secret. I've been doing this double arm drill for many years. If someone is looking for power in their strikes, this is the drill that will give it to them. Thanks Van --------- Art

Just completed 100 double arm thrusts this morning. Man, that really gets the blood pumping. I'm telling you! Try this as a daily drill. It will put a lot of pop in your strikes. This builds the power base. ------Happy Trails ------Art

Sorry I missed this topic Art .yes I am with you on this .

I too make a lot of use of this move ,basically in our Uechi practice we will favor certain aspects ,I tend to favor this as a power drill .

Basically Art here in the UK ,I think it was seen as a part of Sanchin ,but never drilled like you do ,it always seemed a shame to me ,but anyway that is another story .
If I am lucky and I get a student who wants what I offer ,I always start then on the spear hands ,obviously as we develop power it's then transferable .

Hi Art,

In addition to the move you like to practice, one of my favorites for power development is the Wauke thrust as per sensei Nakamatsu here...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf1O4Vjh6wI

....because as you know I use the torque and compression method in my power strikes.

Sensei Nakamatsu has developed some of the strongest Uechi-Ka to be found anywhere.

Thanks for your insight guys. I simply like the double thrust strike as a drill, to get my power base set. There is a feeling of power that sneaks in as you keep thrusting. Tough to explain it, but its there. I then take that feeling and carry it into everything else I do. Really NEED it when you are in the kitchen. ------Happy Trails------Art

How is everyone doing with the double thrust drill? Are you making it a daily part of your training? Are you putting it in your class as a regular part of the exercises? Are you doing enough reps? Are you taking it to the heavy bag? Do you practice it on a partner with protective gear on? {This is a good one} Well? If you ever meet me, we'll stand side by side and do a few. If you want some pop, this is how you get it. --------Happy Trails -------Art

TEACHERS: -----Try this one. Take the first sanchin that you do in class, and try this. Have the class get into a right sanchin and do about 10 or 20 double arm thrusts. On your command, begin the sanchin kata.So they go right from the double thrust to the sanchin arm position, and continue sanchin kata. What, hopefully, will happen is the power base will be set. Then you take it right into the whole sanchin kata. You want to take that feeling you get when performing the double thrusts, and continue it throughout sanchin. Try this drill. I think you'll find success with it. -----Happy Trails ----Art

TAUGHT A CLASS WHERE THE LOWEST RANK WAS 5DAN. GAVE THEM THE DOUBLE THRUST DRILL THEN BROUGHT IT UP INTO SANCHIN THRUSTING. DID IT FOR ABOUT 50 THRUSTS. THEY THOUGHT THAT THEY HAD A NEW TOY. POINT BEING, THAT EVEN ADVANCED STUDENTS CAN BE INTRODUCED TO THIS DRILL. THEY FELT THE POWER BASE SET IN. WHEN I BROUGHT IT UP TO SANCHIN THRUSTS, THEY JUST CONTINUED THAT POWER BASE INTO THE REST OF THE SANCHIN KATA. DO NOT OVERLOOK THIS AS ONE OF THE BEST DRILLS IN SEEKING YOUR POWER. -------Happy Trails -------Art

Re: double thrust power - All Strikes

When you practice your double arm thrust, please keep in mind that it is involved in all strikes. Since I consider blocks as a strike, it is really involved there. If you find time to get over to the web site, you will notice what I refer to. The non striking hand is right there with the striking hand. Both hands are carried into every strike or block. I do this because I want to take the power base into all strikes. That same powerful feeling you experience when doing the double thrust, is what you will get when carrying both hands into any strike. That goes for all infighting strikes as well. Actually, tight infighting strikes is where this principle really is needed. SO--- I suggest that you really practice hitting and blocking this way for real explosive results. Really be aware of striking and blocking this way in all your kata's. You are not just hitting with your arm. You are taking the real power of sanchin's double thrust into all your moves. Want to have explosive strikes and blocks? Keep this method in mind. -----Happy Trails -----Art

Here is a simple, but very good, double thrust drill. This is a very powerful infighting strike, especially when that bad guy closes the distance. It will collapse the upper torso in one shot -- believe me. ----Happy Trails ----Art

Re: double thrust power-Everywhere

Here I am again talking about the power of the double thrust. I thought I'd remind you all, that this double thrust goes everywhere. Down - up - right- and left. It fires as a straight thrust as well as circular. As long as you are taking both hands into that block or strike. ALWAYS using the large sanchin power base to fire into the target. I mentioned in another post about deflecting attacks simply by keeping your hands at the 10 and 2 position. All blocks and strikes come from this double thrust position. Each time you block or strike, that non striking hand is inches from the striking hand. That's all you have to remember --SIMPLE. Nope -- not so. Much time will be needed to establish the muscle memory of the 10 and 2 position. Then to carry it everywhere is another objective. That is why we all are taught this position from the very beginning. We do not know why the teacher keeps placing our arms in this position, but it is constant. As the years move along, this arm position is beginning to make a little more sense. To climb to that "next level" I keep speaking about, you must first absorb this double arm principle fully. I can't do anything without it. Do not think this is the last time you'll hear from me on this topic. Every class I teach, it is brought out repeatedly. It follows me everywhere. It is the norm. THE NORM!!! Not something you work on every now and then. ------Happy Trails ---Art

If, or when, you watch any of the "Art's Lesson" post. Please take the time to check on the double trust concept. You will notice that both hands are involved in everything. All strikes and blocks have both hands involved. The non-striking hand will be inches from the striking hand. If you slip over to my web site, you'll notice it everywhere. Once again ---This should be the norm. To carry sanchin's power base into everything you do, is what I hope I'm getting across. Double thrust speed and power. Once you begin to feel it, you will be a happy camper. Check all my video's . It'll be there. ------Happy Trails -------Art
