ART'S LESSON --

Postby Art Rabesa » Fri Sep 18, 2015 6:24 pm

This is the first lesson on "Art's Lesson". If I'm going to begin this section on this forum, it must begin with a lesson on sanchin. This is my way of teaching sanchin. Not the correct way -- not the best way -- not the only way --just my way. It will move along slowly for instructional purposes. Please forgive my right thumb position on the thrust. That thumb has been busted and dislocated for many years. I do my best to keep it folded out of the way. The main point in this lesson is to set the power base of sanchin. Without it there is nothing. Hope this aids in your sanchin practice. -----Happy Trails -----Art

Striking Mitt Drill #1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXu7hOpUMSQ
One in a series of striking drills. Using the small mobile striking mitt. Also tips on carrying the hands into the strike. Proper hand position for maximum speed and power. One piece body mechanics for stopping power.
Keep an eye out for the next lesson. -------Happy Trails ---------Art

Hitting in one piece is essential for power. To strike as your foot is landing is the key. Seems easy enough, but it will take practice to coordinate. Once you acquire this one piece movement, you will be hitting real hard. This is the second of the striking mitts lessons. More coming. ----Happy Trails ----Art

Here is my lesson on the one knuckle strike. A strike that is misunderstood by many. A real potent strike, causing a lot of damage. Have a look. -------Happy Trails------Art

Urban Legend or fact?

I heard a story that during Kanbun Uechi's teaching days in Okinawa that one of his students got in a confrontation and used a shoken. Really bad things happened. Really bad.

Conclusion: The shoken is a nasty devastating weapon ...did I say nasty...devastating?

A quick lesson on accurate close quarter striking. When real tight, you have to count on touch for your target. The strikes that I'm showing are for close work. Once again, the hand position ( 10 & 2 ) is the real key. From the constant grappling position in a real encounter, comes these strikes. Have a look. ------Happy Trails -------Art

I feel like I was there, wait a minute...I was.

You always get the guy at your seminar that asks the Question .... "Sensei Rabesa what is your GO TO or FAVORITE strike and why?" please elaborate and provide video.

Question 2: If you were marooned on a tropical island, what one person would you want to be stranded with you? please elaborate, videos or pictures optional...

Re: ART'S LESSON --Hand Speed + Power

Postby Art Rabesa » Sun Oct 04, 2015 10:35 pm

This is a simple lesson on developing hand speed.--------- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Hr0nHFqvI ------------- I use it in my personnel training quite a lot. I place the plastic bag on the cement wall in the basement of my home. To hit the wall would not be a good thing. If I have students, I will place it on the heavy bag. To stop the strike as it hits the plastic bag, and pull it back, develops good hand speed. Power comes from the speed of your hand. This simple lesson will get that done. Watch my strikes to detect the snapping, pull back, method. Be safe with this lesson. No cement walls yet. -----Happy Trails -----Art

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTFq45YO3GA -------------------- Here is a look at a good basic close quarter drill. Many times these quick crisp blocks are used to get in. When you are real close, these are great for allowing you to get that strike in. Good lead up drill to getting students comfortable working close. Take a look. --------Happy Trails -------Art

Re: ART'S LESSON --front side hook

Postby Art Rabesa » Tue Oct 13, 2015 3:11 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaxeGO7 ... QSdCUh3_gA ------------------- Here is a lesson on the front side hook punch. Not a jab - but a fast arcing strike. This short, fast, strong, strike is on target in a snap. When done correctly, it has KO results. Another in the series of striking mitt drills. The snapping action here comes just before contact. Looks fairly easy, but it does require you to coordinate that final snap. You can see from the video that some will push the jab out. Once I get an understanding of exactly what is going on, it begins to take shape. At the end of this lesson, everyone was hitting with authority. A real nice strike. Hits sneaky hard. Have a look. -------Happy Trails -----Art

Re: ART'S LESSON --double thrust

Postby Art Rabesa » Sat Oct 17, 2015 9:35 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJLQmHZ8Ddc -----------------Here is a quick double thrust lesson. Maurice and I doing the double thrust strike on the heavy bag. The opening of sanchin kata. This is a potent close quarter strike that can really do some damage. Many simply see it as sanchin's opening. It is much more than a part of sanchin. A strike that should be respected. ------Happy Trails -------Art

Postby Art Rabesa » Tue Oct 27, 2015 10:52 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsUYIXL ... QSdCUh3_gA -------------------------- A quick lesson concerning the shin thrust and the open hand strike. Coming off any of the leg thrusts I teach, will be an open hand head shot. It'll come right over the thrusting leg. Tough for the bad guy to deal with this one. I'll have more of this type of technique coming up. Have a look.--------Happy Trails ----Art

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31SJxwM ... ------Have a look at a sanchin thrust drill I teach. This drill will give you the location of your sanchin power base. It may not feel very strong in the beginning. Hang in there with this exercise because it will pay off in time. Hitting very hard from very close comes from this drill. --------Happy Trails-------Art

Re: ART'S LESSON --wauke

Postby Art Rabesa » Sat Oct 31, 2015 1:54 pm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHMJygm ... QSdCUh3_gA -------------------Here is a look at my view of the "Wauke" block in Uechi Ryu. The posting hand remains in sanchin. This allows it to aid in the actual block. As I state in this little clip,"it is simply how I view this middle area block". I show this as a way to perform the wauke ----not the correct way ------- just how I interpret it. I always want to get to that attack as quickly as possible. This method allows me to do that. --------Happy Trails -------Art
