Here is a lesson on making solid impact with your strikes. It's VERY important to deliver your strikes, torquing through the power mode of sanchin. Practice the snapping torque of the torso. Now coordinate the strike and torque to work together. Time is needed on this. Lots of time. Practice it constantly to build up that muscle memory. To explode your hands and legs from a short distance, this is step one. Watch my hands and torso as I deliver the strike, including kicks. More lessons on kata - elbows - blocking - coming up. Have to find a better place to hang my heavy bag I guess. ------Happy Trails-------Art

I'm moving this "Impact Zone" thread from the forum to this impact lesson. It ties in to the lesson video nicely.

This thread also needs to be hand and hand with anything to do with impact. When viewing ANY lesson video, you'll detect the limbs in a crescent position. There's quite a bit going on at impact. To explode at impact all these things need to come together. PRACTICE HARDER.... --------Happy Trails ------Art

This power double strike is something I practice a lot. Maurice and I will exchange this strike on the heavy bag. A great close quarter strike that really explodes up into the body. This is the opening movement of sanchin. I want to elaborate this movement to illustrate just how strong it is. Now --when sanchin is practiced, you can begin with this very explosive double arm thrust. Great power drill. Put it in your workout. -----Happy Trails----Art

Here's a few tips on certain Uechi Ryu kata movements. Here you can get a good look at one piece movement. I talk a great deal about moving in one piece. Now you can see what I mean. Maurice Soque 6th dan is aiding me with this lesson. I'll have more kata tips as we go along. Getting your kata to move smoothly with good power, is what you should be working on. I hope these kata tips help. -----Happy Trails-----Art

I would like to add a comment to your one piece movement in katas, one of the noticeable benefits is the amount of time you shave off in milli/seconds moving from movement to movement. You are not taking away from the power and completion of the thrusts or kicks, you see all that, you still perform full/complete and fluid and powerful blocks. However when performing your kata in a group with other Uechi Karateka, the kata finishes well before everybody else finishes...it happens like this every time. The fluidity of the kata is taken to another level, yet never sacrificing any of the power or fullness of the movements. Going from point A to point B is just exponentially faster and more explosive. I hope I did not steal the next Post you were planning to write Sensei Rabesa. Yours in Uechi Ryu and your student since 1979, Maurice Soque.

I have the fighting shin thrust lesson posted earlier. Here is how I like to practice the shin thrust. The heavy bag on the floor gives me an over load strike. Meaning that it's much heavier than any human leg. It's also a good shin conditioning drill as well. Do both legs numerous times. Have the person holding the heavy bag, hold up a striking mitt also. Now you can fire the open hand when the shin hits the heavy bag. This shin thrust is the maximum. This is at the top of the damage scale. This is the strike of no return. That's why you must never put this baby on anyone in the dojo. Always use it on the bag. This is THE STRIKE to have with you at all times. It's fast and explodes onto the leg. Need this for that 6'5" 270 lb. hombre. Remember----that's why you train on that large heavy bag. The bigger the heavy bag the better. --------Happy Trails------Art

I'm going over some striking zones in close quarter combat. There are more striking areas but these are the main ones. Watch the hands as the strike is delivered. Take both hands into each strike. The torquing of the body is coordinated with the striking hand. Everything hits together. Even though the strikes are close, the one piece mechanics must still prevail. Your partner can use two mitts and move them around to different striking areas. Arc the strikes back to your body when contact is made. This allows for a sharper impact and better time on target. ------Happy Trails -----Art

Some more sparring instruction. Taken from a seminar I did at Sensei Tracy Rose's Uechi Ryu School in Northborough Massachusetts. Brown belts in the beginning of their sparring introduction. Can't make things complicated when you begin fighting. Minor tips to work on. Ground work set before working on fighting techniques. ------Happy Trails-----Art

Radial -- Ulna -- Elbow. The big three in close quarter striking. I go over these strikes slowly to show the path and striking area. Good to use a partner when working the impact areas. Since you can not hit your partner with these strikes, you must work them on the heavy bag. When you develop a good understanding of these three strikes, you can really explode them on the bag. Very tight strikes that cause a great deal of damage. In your practice, you'll discover that your arm is always in a position to deliver that radial. It comes out of no where and hits very hard. A look at the tight back hand strike also.

Here is a short lesson on the front side snap hook strike. It may look like a jab but it's anything but. It really takes off and hits very hard. I like it coming off the shuffling movement. This can be done in close when stationary, or from a distance. Like most things ----this might look easy. As you can see, it does take practice to get the explosion. Always keep an eye on the body and the non-striking hand as the strike is delivered. Everything moving in one piece --everything hitting at the same--very important. The late snap of the hand is what explodes the hand onto the target. I use this baby a lot. Coming off this strike with the other hand just adds to it's success. This is a quick video, but I think you will get it's meaning. -----Happy Trails ----Art

This is what I use to develop the snap hook strike. I have it on the cement wall of my basement. Here I have it on the kicking bag. This weird looking drill really makes your strike explode. After you do 40 or more of these strikes ( with each hand) -----take it to the heavy bag. You will detect it's benefits. This lesson attaches to the one above. To have both hands ready to explode in a snap (and hit very hard) is quite an advantage. Nice to have. -----Happy Trails---Art

Two more leg thrusts that need to be added. Both hit low into the legs of the attacker. Needed because you might get spun around and find the attacker, or attackers, behind you. Good to have these in a multiple attack situation. Absolutely not a fighting technique. All the leg thrusts are for one purpose only. To cause damage fast allowing for that escape window. I like having these leg thrusts in my ammo bag. They're my 12 gauge shotgun. -----Happy Trails----Art
