Uechi Ryu Magazine Articles

Post by Glenn »

Some of you may recall a thread I started in 2005to compile magazine articles related to Uechi Ryu. In addition to incorporating the articles others suggested at that time, I have continued to periodically work on this project and now have the list up to 66 articles. Plus I have been able to fill in much of the missing information, and correct some errors, in the original list. So I thought an update might be in order. As before, this list includes:
- Articles specifically about Uechi Ryu or Uechi Ryu practitioners
- Articles not specifically about Uechi Ryu but in which Uechi Ryu is a significant component
- Articles written by Uechi Ryu practitioners
I have included a brief description of what the article is about for some that I thought needed it.

And as before, please chime in if you know any of the missing info or any articles not on the list.

Impressive list, Glenn. I can't find any omissions.

I hope others can chime in here. This is an important and very useful project.

By the way, are you going to start including videos and documentaries? Uechi has made it big recently with National Geographic, the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, etc.

I have an article not on that list. I'll dig it out.
I have also used historic newspaper research to find a few news articles in Massachusetts and the NY Times.
In ten years this will be far easier than now.
Professionally made videos would be a nice asset also to have citations on.
Snippets of them end up on youtube (plagiarism?).

That's a good suggestion, I don't see why not. It would be useful to have a list of those compiled as well.

By the way, I have this list as a PDF document that I can e-mail if anyone wants a copy for some reason.

Just glancing through the search on Google News, I noticed a lot of the Uechi Ryu news articles are from the St Petersburg Times, apparently Uechi Ryu makes the news quite often there...which could be a good thing and could be a not so good thing...

Hello.

That is a very detailed and impressive list. May I respectfully add one more article to the list. That being the article written by Massad F. Ayoob, in Black Belt magazine, March issue 1974, with an interview with and on Robert J. Campbell, pages 22 – 25. Titled “A Bridge Between Two Worlds”.

Thank you,
Jay Sal.

The semester is over and I not only survived but thrived. I took over the reigns of two lecture courses at the university half-way through the semester for an instructor who went on maternity leave, and those combined with my normal two classes at the community college meant I had ~270 students. Plus I was taking 3 courses myself, and providing computer mapping on a research project examining how Washington D.C. changed during the Civil War. Needless to say it has been a busy 2 months.

I have decided that I do not like stepping into someone else's classes mid-term, but all in all a good learning experience since I had never taught such large classes before (one of the university courses had 150 students alone), and seeing what other instructors do with their courses is always good.

And I almost made it through without any major issues. Then the week after the semester had ended and grades were posted, a student contacted me with a story that he had found an assignment that had supposedly been graded by the other instructor but that she had somehow not recorded in the grades spreadsheet. I agreed to meet with him and as soon as I saw it I knew the grade had been falsified, and the other instructor confirmed it. So now I have an academic dishonesty case to deal with before I can say the semester is truly over.

At any rate, I have been necessarily absent from the forum but can now turn my attention back to items like this magazine list, which I still have a few updates for. On that note, I have decided that I will not add newspaper articles as some have suggested, I will stick to magazine articles for now. Someone else may want to tackle compiling newspaper articles, I just do not think I will have time to do it justice for the foreseeable future.

One particular addition I will make to the list: I noticed at Barnes and Noble the other day that the current issue of "Classical Fighting Arts" (formerly "Dragon Times") has Part I of an interview with Ryuko Tomoyose that some of you might be interested in. I do not recall seeing anywhere before that he had originally trained under Chojun Miyagi before switching to Uechi Ryu, but he talks a bit about his time with Miyagi as well as the early history of Uechi Ryu. Part II is set to appear in the next issue.

Isn't it amazing how brazen people can be?

And yet... some student falsified his academic records to the point that he had Harvard believing he got perfect SAT scores and had a 4.0 at MIT. He would have graduated from Harvard this year, except that he applied to Oxford and similarly falsified his records for them. Oy!!! You'd think he would quit while he was ahead. Now he's likely going to be spending time in prison, as he also got about $45 K in scholarship money to go to Harvard - based on a false record.

It just goes to show, Glenn, that you're smarter than the average Harvard administrator! 8)

I absolutely was aware that Tomoyose Ryuko had studied Goju. So did David Finkelstein - one of my early (second) Uechi instructors. It's one reason why David and "Tommy" got along so well. That and the fact that they're both great guys.

I didn't know it was Miyagi Chojun though. But that makes sense. In any case it was clear that his father wanted his son to have teachers other than himself. And being a father and having tried teaching my own son, I totally get that.

If you're as good as Tomoyose Ryuyu and you want your son to study from the best, well... you could do a lot worse than Miyagi Chojun. It's also worth mentioning that the Sanchin that Miyagi was taught (by Higashionna Kanryo) was the early open-handed one. That being the case, I'm wondering which Sanchin(s) Tommy was exposed to.
