The history of 19th Century “Te” – There has been quite a bit of speculation trying to link together the few fragments that we have about this period of karate development and various attempts to construct some kind of history, but personally, I don’t buy any of it. The material that we do have on this pre-history of karate can be found in Andreas Quast’s terrific “Karate 1.0. Parameter of an Ancient Martial Art.”

Shinzato’s demonstration and the name Goju Ryu – Re Jinan Shinzato’s demonstration in Japan, according to Morio Higaonna this took place at the All Japan Martial Arts Demonstration held at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, May 1930. Takao Nakaya (“KarateDo History and Philosophy”, fifth edition, 2014), states that Shinzato travelled to Tokyo to give a demonstration at the Gotairei Hoshuku Zenkoku Budo Taikei ( All Japan Martial Arts Tournament for the Celebration of the Enthronement Ceremony) held at the Meiji Shrine on May 4 and 5, 1929. Nakaya believed that Shinzato demonstrated the kata Sanchin and Seisan at this event.
