Virginia is very pro self-defense without this bill. Virginia is governed by Old English Common Law that espouses the Castle Doctrine. Also, case law strongly supports self defense. This would have codified it and made it very difficult for a gang banger/ family thereof to sue someone who used self defense against an attacker.
A few months ago a Baskin Robbins employee shot and killed a perp as he ran away. As I predicted the grand jury refused to indict him. This is a typical outcome in VA.
There are a few other good SD laws moving forward that will give a boost to the right of self defense.

One has to wonder whether the trial attorneys were concerned they may miss an opportunity to sue a wealthy homeowner. Even when they lose, they often win via settlement. After all, it's where the money is.
Virginia is a very politically contrary state. With a Republican in the White House for almost 8 years, the governorship and much of the General Assembly has gone Democrat. These tend to be more of the gun control types.
Give it time. The pendulum always swings back the other way. It's a basic law of physics and of human behavior.
By the way, did you notice the comments after the article? They were 100% for the proposed law, and they were in no way subtle. Interesting...![Wink ;-)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
