Good Leg Calfs
Strong legs seem to have a special place in Karate, even though many experts I talk to prefer using punches over kicks. Feet are used to properly anchor the body for strikes. in shadow sparring, students are encourage to move around constantly. George Mattson's basic daily exercise class always incl...

Re: The Footprints of Kanbun Uechi
"Chou Tze prostitute" I agree that the translation went badly in this case. Great names in other language can sound horrible in English. For instant, one common Chinese surname is prostitute, slang for prostitute. It has multiple meanings in 9 different Chinese writing: "to congratula...

"softness overcomes hardness"
Part of karate technique is to bend from a blow. If a block is too stiff, it will absorb the full force of the strike, causing damages.

"self-restraint is very important."
Kanbun Uechi was strict in self-control. Kanbun dismissed Moritoshi Urasaki after he drank too much and lost his temper.

Herbs and Longevity
One teaching I really respect in George Mattson's classes is his teaching of the importance of longevity. This brings up a potential serious flaw in ancient medicine. When Kanbun Uechi was born in May 5, 1877, Okinawa, Japan's life expectancy was only about 37 years. With life so short, karate maste...

Re: Robot sparring partner
Sensei George Mattson commented that having an exoskeleton moving your body will not produce muscle memory. The person has to do it himself many, many times. Still, the exoskeleton can position his body to help him learn quickly.

The longer I learned karate, the more I appreciate about the importance of students tweaking kata styles a bit to suit their personality and limitations. Injuries often prevent the students from using the illustrated fist or strike techniques so they modify them a bit so they can still perform them....

Re: Robot sparring partner
Another option is full-body exoskeleton suits hooked up to a computer loaded with all sorts of kata--from the basics to advanced. You can put on the suit and code it to what kata you want to learn. It then can move your arms and legs perfectly matching correct blocks and strikes. After enough hours,...

Always a great comfort to find friends while traveling. During my travels throughout the US, most are to visit friends to say hello.

Thanks. The article is very involved. Agree with Cagney's decision to cast a known Judo expert as his opponent in Blood on the Sun to make the fight scenes as authentic as possible.
Behind the Rising Sun has an interesting “style-versus-style” match-up which makes great storytelling.

Thanks for the video link. Amazing control! Fists stopped so close to the face that the slightest miscalculation will result in teeth getting knocked out. Blocking the Ryote Tsuki Uke looks challenging because of needing to track both hands.

"In any case, martial artists in China were certainly not a part of the upper classes" Agree. The upper class can afford body guards. In according to ancient Chinese legends, the villagers asked the lion to protect them from the evil monster coming to lay waste to their village. The lion s...
