Practical Cane applications

Some in our group practice cane counterattacks. The most practicle movements seem to me to come from Fillipino stick methods. Direct and to the point(no pun intended). More and more the cane appears to be the most practical weapon as its legal and we'll all hopefully live long enough to need one.

Excellent commentary. These christian extremist(American taliban) pander to the lowest most common denomonator of the American public, its complete ignorance of Americas' founding principles, ethnocentric observance of everything outside of our borders, and a manipulative, convenient, interpretation ...

Junior, In my opinion you're getin' shafted on training time with exercise takin up half of it.What part of self defense is a push up or sit up? You'll get your exercise as a side benifit of rigorous training. Tim

Facing the attacking dog

At the most recent Multi-dimentional Warrior Camp held in South Africa, the focus was defense against attack dogs(common weapons in shantys, ghettos, etc.) Live training with attack dogs, Rotts,Mastiffs, G. Shepards, Ridgebacks, led to the development of sound principles for real situations. I didn't ...

I gotta totally agree w/Ij on Fast food(culinary Crack). True no one gets nutty after a Mcfat burger, but sooner or later yours and my taxes are paying for the medical bills due to their declining health, in part due to their pathetic diet. Some sort of regulation is needed to save these people who ...

President Bush's academic and proffessional record are public record, so conclusions can be made , and as a citizen affected by his decisions(which are supposedly made in the intrest of the citizenry) I have the right to be critical of the president. I'm a card carrying member of the "center", an ...

Training for the random

In Amok, we approach attack scenarios as either possible or probable(as any attack is possible, but some are more probable) so we work the probable attacks. Our key to working counters to random attacks is reacting out of ones' relative body, hand, and foot positions at the "oh sh-t!" moment ...

While I'm not a Uechi player(Isshinryu,Amok), I feel this type of training should be the foundation of kata application. Eventually building to counter and recounter reflexes(in the event the attacker picks up your counter, a skill in itself). Interesting clip.

I'm beginning to believe that self defense techniques are like music. Theres nothing that hasn't been done before, its just how one interprets the application. So anyone can string together their favorite techniques and label it their kata. But the techniques themselves are nothing new, just as with ...

Not to rain on any parade, but what the heck would a black belt have to do with college acceptance? I would question any college that gave it weight. I mean really, the practice of martial arts is a self indulgent experience, you do it for personal reasons, not like you're benefitting a community ...
