Speaking of over zealous testing, has anybody ever had the experience of being tested in sanchin by Mr. Takamyagi? Something you don't easily forget.

Another low cost alternative is to fill up those plastic containers that protein powder comes in with either sand or water. They work great and its easy to change the weight as you need to. The lid of the jar is the perfect size and since its plastic, dropping it is not a big deal.

Mike:
You'd think so. To me this is an application, not
the application. I think some of the applications shown, but in my mind these are basic. maybe it is to show something for demonstrations, but I agree with you.

And as far as criticizing "punching air," I wonder why boxers are never criticized for shadow boxing. Or for the speed bag for that matter. Both are very practical exercises and good training techniques. Why bash kata or kihon?

Does anybody have any thoughts on Lyoto Machida, the new UFC lightheavyweight champion who's standup style is shotokan? He's undefeated in the UFC and has been training since he was 5 years old. Other standup fighters find him very hard to figure out. Of course his blackbelt i BJJ doesn't hurt eithe...

I am not Ian or Bill but I can speak to your question. I had a total hip replacement in 2006 and have returned to karate. I was back in a limited way at 7 weeks and have been as good as before for approximately 2 years. I stopped doing small circle jujitsu since the surgery but have returned to uech...

Hypnosis is not only "real" but is an important part of traditional martial arts, especially karate. Properly done kata practice is self hypnosis. When you visualize the opponent, or walk through techniques in your mind you are doing hypnosis, whether you think you are or not. i think most...

Many styles utilize knife training on a regular basis, something most uechi schools do not. Many a night I've come home from jujitsu a little shaken in my ability after doing poorly in knife defense exercises, realizing that if the blade had been real I'd be dead. After you get over that discomfort ...

Thanks Bill and Greg for lending some logic to this on and on argument about kumite and prearranged EXERCISES. The argument drives me crazy. Yeah going forward to "attack the attack, crowd the weapon" etc is the idea, but the reality we all are likely to flinch at first.being able to GO BA...

Anybody else think that uechi is a great way to be able to train and protect yourself-if that is one of the reasons you train-as you get older? As an over 50 guy I know that I cannot train as if I were 30 any more. I also know that for brief periods I can still fight enough to protect myself against...

Been lurking and feel the need to respond. Anyone feel that one advantage a boxer has is that they hit with bad intent from day one in the gym and know no other way to train? This is an advantage as the all out attack mentality is a hard wired response i.e. they only have one speed to reply to attac...
