< Which makes me think that this was a thing for demonstrations only...and got a bit out of hand ..............I know that at the last Uechi club I went to I was appalled at how little they did to protect their heads, they kept their hands down and made all sorts of tstsing noices .............now i...

My 2 cnets. A good, strong, sanchin with the hands held a little high. Pivoting a bit from the waist into the attack using the stance enables you to use a simple block that is very effective. The key is to bring the hands up a bit, which is ok as the attacker is committed to hitting you in the head....

Don't know if this has been posted before. About four minutes into this video Mr. Shinjo shows some prearranged stuff with takedowns. Interested to see what people think about these techniques.

Conditioning is not only to protect, but also to enhance a strike. The shin can be used as a block-as in a rising knee from seisan, or a strike as in a crescent kick with the shin to the leg. Same for the arms. A strong forearm can be either a block or a strike. Working on the timing of how the cond...

Bill: Great point on the names of moves. Since I have been viewing Rick Wilson's videos (wilsonkarate.com) and his interpretations of the kata as well as doing some cross training I have come to appreciate the complexities and almost infinite uses of many of the kata's moves. If we don't get caught ...

Could someone explain which moves are "crane on the rock", "grab and carry" and "hawk chases sparrow"? I've done this kata for 15 years an find it to be one of the most fun and thought provoking in the system. I have always heard terms like knee strike, fishtail block, ...

During the strike the stationary hand should be still i.e. not drifting toward the centerline.

Exceptional for agreen belt level.

Very good kata. I like the emphasis on the hip and lower body. Most of the Okikukai teachers (Walter Mattson, Master Takara, Master Nakamatsu and others) teach it that way. The idea here is that the lower body is where the strength is and this leads to a more powerful strike. I like to see the non s...

I liked it a lot. An easy read that can be done in a day. the author has studied a lot of different arts and i found his take on the zen aspect interesting. I'd recommend it.

You can use an adjustable dumbell. Load one side with a number of heavy plates, for example 3 tens and the other side, the side you will grasp, with a five. Grasp the five in the manner that Bill describes, the same way you'd grasp the lip of the jar. You will be carrying essentially a 40 # "ja...

You can use dumbells held vertically by the weight (rather than by the handle) to do the same exercises. This is easier than filling the jars and is more exact.

I agree 100% As far as stand up goes you really can't beat the skills taught in uechi. the only thing missing in uechi is the "one shot kill" that many believe they have is probably not there. Combinations of punches along with a good mobile sanchin stance can compensate for that. I do thi...
