Re: Uechi vs Judo?

Weird vid. It took me half the video to figure out who the Uechi guy was (I assume its the guy wearing the gi). 1. I wonder if this isn't mislabeled. The "judo" guy isn't wearing a gi, and seems predisposed to pull guard and do other things that are more in keep with a BJJ strategy. It sou...

Ha @ Jake. I decided to take Jake's advice and go with Combat Sports Boston but then I had a semi-massive back injury (nothing serious, but I paralyzed my lungs accidentally) and haven't been able to exercise for several months. I'm hoping to test my luck in a boxing class at CSB this coming week. ...

David, The "other local guy" is actually from my camp. He is a tough, tough, kid. I knew going into this fight that he was in for a war. I haven't had a chance to watch the fight yet, but with those two in there, I'm not shocked that they earned fight of the night. I imagine they'll both g...

I'll say this much; the staff at that gym comes mostly from another Boston location. I've seen how fighters from the other location perform and conduct themselves, and have been underwhelmed, to say the least. I know a few of the trainers at Combat Sports Boston--they are good, honest trainers who c...

Hmmh. How can I put this delicately? I can think of better places for you to train. I'll leave it at that. If that area works for you, check out Combat Sports Boston. http://www.combatsportsboston.com/ Good group of guys, very solid background. Or you could take the T out a couple of stops and come ...

I didn't put Grossman on there because i was limited to 5 books. If we're breaking that limited, he's the first one I would have added back in.

Of course, I'd keep going until the shelf was breaking, if it were up to me...

so u think jiu jutsu is the "deepest" art? does it contain the aikido and judo stuff for the most part? maybe packaged differently? I thought BJJ was touted to be the most effective training iteration. so did brazillians train in japan or did japanese teach in brazil? Arguing about which ...

If you want to get technical, BJJ is actually an offshoot of Judo.

What is it exactly you want to compare?

How to visit a martial arts school

An article mostly aimed at new folks, but I think it has some relevance for any martial artist traveling around to different locations.

...People can get cut up pretty badly during clinch work, or by long toenails during sparring. Which is not to say that everyone always follows these rules, but we're pretty vigilant about it. I wonder if attitudes have changed since the rise of resistant bacteria??? I am reminded of stories my bro...

Hey Jake, I was speaking hypothetically -- the guy who cut me actually maintains his nails to use for guitar playing - I just re-read my first post and realized I was unclear about this -- I mean, he's certainly aware of the martial possiblilities of long nails, but I don't think that's his primary...

Yes, agreed, but what if nails are part of your overall self defense plan and SD is the reason you train? Then as far as I'm concerned, you can train with someone else. I have no interest in risking my vision, a MRSA infection, or generally being sliced to ribbons because you feel the need to maint...
