Yes, 2Green, but what's the only crossing that goes North to South from the US into Canada? ;)

Since someone else decided to run off on the Canadian healthcare tangent, I'll continue it. :) Having just moved to Canada from the US, I can see that each system has its benefits and flaws. In Canada, we are covered, no ifs ands or buts. We've had lousy experiences finding a good primary care physi...

Yep, Stryke, Canada's cool. :) I like to document my assertions, and was hoping to find information on UN election procedures, but haven't yet. Hopefully this'll do: http://www.disabilityworld.org/01-02_01/gov/carter.htm "In a January 9, 2001 interview aired on National Public Radio's "Mor...

Let's not forget that the Red Cross estimates 70-90% of the detainees were arrested by mistake (see below link). http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4944094/ Once again, we hold everyone else to higher standards than those to which we hold ourselves. And this all began with the questionable election of Geor...

As I watched the people on the news debate the issue of whether such footage should be aired, my thought was this: We should see the pictures from Abu Ghraib so we all understand what monsters we are capable of being, that some Americans are the same as our enemies. We don't need to see the Berg foo...

I just read the original post and I thought I would take a shot at it. For me, the initial attraction of the martial arts, particularly aikido, was the power. Not "power over" as in the ability to dominate, but "power of" -- martial presence, if you will. I read George Leonard's ...

Parallels to other arts/alternative med/spiritual practices

I was searching for some information on the Net last night, and came across a karate site that used acupuncture points to describe striking targets. I also read in one of the Barefoot Doctor's books (he practices wayward Taoism), that putting the tongue to the roof of the mouth completes the yin-yan...

the karate family tree -- Goju and Uechi?

I used to train in a style derived from Uechi, and then switched to Goju.

Naturally, there are tons of similarities, but also many differences. How do the two styles relate to each other? Did one spin off from the other? Did they have a common ancestor?

Thanks,
Ryo

We just need an organization with the clout to sway politicians. . . the NNA (National Nunchaku Association).

I think the reason guns are permitted with restrictions and martial arts weapons are not is simply that gun owners are more prevalent and yell louder.

nipping resentment in the bud

Because of a couple years prior training in a similar style, my new Sensei expressed an interest in multiple testing me my first test. I anticipate that this will generate resentment from another white belt, currently my sempai, who I imagine will test for a single belt. He and I already don't see e...

Dealing with Difficult People -- in the Dojo

After a session last night with a black belt who just plain wasn't following instructions and apparently does this often, I feel compelled to ask: What do you do about difficult/hazardous people in the dojo? When they rank (far) higher? When they rank lower? Seems every dojo attracts at least one of...

recovering from a broken wrist

I broke my wrist (badly) a year ago and had to get it surgically fixed. I just returned to the martial arts and wanted to see if anyone had any insight. The flexibility is good. I can still snap an ura uchi, but I feel a little bit of strain in the inside of my elbow. Shote strikes hurt, but I can d...

Uechi-ryu in Vancouver, BC?

I am seeking a Uechi-ryu dojo in Vancouver, BC. I had found a listing for Michael Dunphy, but it is no longer in service: Michael Dunphy: Vancouver, B.C., Canada: 604-844-1093 Is he still teaching in the area, or is there another dojo that teaches Uechi? If not Uechi, then what style would be the mo...
