Sensei says is also a good game for stances and basic commands. . . we never knocked anyone out, just let them realize they goofed. You can also have the kids jump up and down and shout directions in the dojo -- shomen, migi, hidari, ura-shomen -- and have them turn as the commands are called while ...

I have a friend who tells them he has a diarrhea and then leaves the phone sitting there. I don't feel all that bad, to be honest. I've done telemarketing, and if someone didn't want to talk to me, fine. But I had a call once from a lawn care company, and I told them up front that I wasn't a big law...

If it worries you that much, stay there with the child and don't move. It's hard to accuse someone of abduction if they never take the kid anywhere. If I found a lost child, I'd be reluctant to move very far from where I found them, much less put them in a car. Old conventional wisdom says to stay p...

Dave, I started with aikido. I'd read George Leonard's book The Ultimate Athlete in high school, and I was impressed with the tales of people who averted fights by their presence alone. I vowed to study the art, one day. Having been raised in a family environment where "power over" ...

Practicing Okinawan karate as an internal art?

Hi guys, I've always been interested in the more internal arts (aikido in particular), but by chance and fortune, ultimately ended up in Kouburyu and then Goju-ryu. I see some of the regulars on this forum talk from time to time about the internal aspects of the art, but I was wondering if there are...

For anyone who's interested, there's a book titled "Back Off!" about the topic of sexual harassment.

Sometimes, according to the book, cat calling is a form of rape testing -- seeing by a woman's reaction whether she will be compliant or will fight back.

Just a heads-up --

Sensei McKenna just split his blog off from the rest of his site to here: http://okinawakarateblog.blogspot.com/

Much of it is over my head, but enjoy.

Back to the original topic. . . lol. I just reads a great book titled "Controlling People" and written by Patricia Evans. I *love* this book. Basically, the idea is that controlling people aren't partnering with you, but a pretend person they think is you. Confronting them is worse and val...

Ipon nukite?

Please forgive the transliteration if it's poor, but tonight in my Goju class, I brought up Ipon Nukite, which is one of the strikes I learned of (but didn't learn) when I studied Kouburyu. What would this strike be used for? It seems rather impractical for all but the fleshiest bits. One of the whi...

Now mind you, I haven't had the opportunity to verify this, but my dad, who evacuated the city, tells me that Sheriff Harry Lee ordered up busses to evacuate people before the fact. Almost no one would board them.
