Bill, Glad you liked the Shisochin video. That's me :-) If you click my Youtube profile, you can find a video of me performing Tensho at a demonstration in Malaysia a couple months back. Russ Interesting... Loved the video of Shisochin, Jim. Talk about a walk down memory lane... It hurts to think th...

White Crane Kung Fu seminar - Tampa, FL area

I would like to invite you to a seminar I am conducting in late March. I am having Sifu Eric Ling, who I met in Malaysia late last year come teach Whooping and Ancestral White Crane forms and fighting principles. I truly enjoyed my time training with him in Malaysia, and I am sure many of you would ...

Mike,

That's shorthand for "Spit, Swallow, Sink and Float", which are Tun, Tu, Fu Chu (or something similar) in Mandarin.

Best Regards,

Russ

Bill, Thanks for the kind remarks. I'm sure that if any Uechi-ka are able to make it, that they would be given a place in the event. I do know that the funding for bringing in people from overseas is something that has frustrated those putting together the event. I'm sure the next gathering will be ...

Martial Arts Gathering 2007

Friends, When you have a moment, please take a look at this thread: http://forum.kungfumagazine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46269 My Whooping Crane friend Eric Ling, who started the Wu Lin I Jia forums, just recently released the official website for the Martial Arts Gathering 2007 in Kuching, Sarawa...

Unlike Taira-lineage Ryukyu Kobudo, who practices 2-3 versions of both Shushi Nu Kun and Sakugawa Nu Kun, the Matayoshi line only practices one of each. In my opinion, Matayoshi's version of Shushi Nu Kun appears to be similary to Taira's Shusho Nu Kun Dai and Matayoshi's version of Sakugawa Nu Kun ...

The guy with the white beard doing the Nicho Nunchaku form is Nakamoto Masahiro, who's school is called the Bunbukan. Yep - on another viewing that is probably not Kanmei Uechi. I don't recognize him. Master Senaga moves very similarly to how he did in the DVD GEM sells. I do not think the nunchaku ...

Re: shinshukan - kobudo

Diego, If you don't mind, I would greatly appreciate it. Best Regards, Russ In the center is Masrer Shinzato and my kobudo Sensei (I am with the red T-shirt) http://diegoz-ar.tripod.com/sepmun2004/shinshukan_mundialito_1.jpg Hi GojuMaster, I do not have at this time the Japanese writing for that nam...

diegoz_ar, It sounds like you are studying the kobudo of Shinzato. I've always wondered why the kata I know as Ni Cho Sai is called Chihara No Sai in that group. Do you have the Japanese writing for that name? Best Regards, Russ I practice the same Sai kata: Chihara-no-sai; and the same tuifa kata: ...

Re: Oar kata

Glenn, I do recall that the tonfa and nunchaku kata were absolutely different than what I have learned and can be seen on the Japanese-language video. Best Regards, Russ I don't know how Gushi Sensei is regarding video, but Matayoshi's demonstrations on the Tsunami videos were largely made up on the...

Re: Oar kata

Glenn, I think my words were poorly-chosen. I should not have said "unrecognizable". I just went back to watch Matayoshi Sensei perform Choun, Shushi, and Sakugawa No Kun to refresh my memory. According to the method I've been taught, he's doing things 90% the standard way, and modifying a...

Re: Oar kata

I don't know how Gushi Sensei is regarding video, but Matayoshi's demonstrations on the Tsunami videos were largely made up on the spot. Some of the kata are nearly unrecognizable. For starters, Chris ... "Ecu" is one of the many spellings for "oar." http://www.dragon-tsunami.org...

Re: Master Senega's Kobudo

John, I'm not sure of the exact line of your Matayoshi Kobudo, but I recognize the sai kata as "Ni Cho Sai", which is the first sai kata taught by my teacher Gakiya Yoshiaki. Also, the tonfa kata he performs we call "Tonfa Dai Ichi". The sai and tonfa kata you describe sound like...
