While I agree with the author of the first article (not Rick's, the other one), Ian something or other, he said in an interview one thing I disagree with.

He said karate was never meant for defeating a skilled attacker.

Of course, everything's harder when you're facing a skilled attacker, but ...

In fact, if you read Rick's excellent article on ground striking, you'll find moves from ...............Drum roll please....

The katas!

That neck crank looks a heck of a lot like the crossed arms and slide back in Kanchin.

Look at Rick's arm position when he is executing the elbow break dismount ...

There's really more to these "esoteric moves" as Ian describes them than is seen on the first viewing, or even the second or third. I liked this article:

I particularly liked the concept of adapting ...

We acknowledge the existence of the word "God," not any corresponding entity.

Math is not my strong point, Rich. :D

So what you're saying is, to learn 50 techniques takes 27 hours? Am I getting that wrong?

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.

Say, for green belt, about how many hours are spent on weapons? Striking? Ground?

As I said, math is not my strong point ...

Van:

Does Dan kumite qualify in your opinion?

Rich: I'm curious as to how long each training section takes for the marines. E.g. how many classes until you feel the marine has become proficient (not an expert, just reasonably proficient) in area? For instance, how many classes for throws ...

Jake,

I'm absolutely certain that TMA's bash other styles. That pisses me off too. But my only point is that it annoys me a bit that some arts have gotten worse reputations than others. That's all.

And, I agree. Well said Dana.

I hear you Aaahmed. I agree.

I'm happy Semmy Schilt won K-1.

Maybe now people will take karate more seriously.

I hope..

Another good one is Uchi mata, sweeping between the legs. Very popular.

F.Channel:

I like Osoto gari as well, but it doesn't work as well for short or light people (like me) as something like ippon seionage, because I don't have to sink as far as if I were taller. Also works nicely as a choke ...

Don't know if that's what you're describing.

If so, it's a judo throw called Ouchi Gari, meaning "Major inside reaping throw," which probably accounts for Rich's "major reap."

I don't know. It just annoys me. :D

You're right, I shouldn't let it get to me. Whenever I hear such things, I confess that it really sets me off. It shouldn't, but it does. That's just me. Call me crazy.
