Nope, not flu season yet. That doesn't come until October or so. But that doesn't mean you don't have the flu. The "real" flu, caused by the influenza virus, is pretty nasty. Usually you have a high fever (say, 103) and painful muscle aches. It really knocks you on your butt. Most of what ...

The ketchup thing in the states is huge. Partly because all the big burger franchises offer it. Ketchup is now outsold by salsa though. Not so- that was a bit of sensationalism in the media a few years ago. Sales of salsa did briefly have a higher gross- but salsa is more than twice as expensive pe...

As for the infection risk, lets just say I still wear gloves with patients who are Hep A,B,C and HIV negative. We called it "nonA, nonB hepatitis" when we had no idea what hep C was--ask some of my dying patients if all blood transfusions are benign. There's still "cryptogenic" ...

Finally, some combat tai chi. I guess that stuff really does have self defense value.

On the other hand- a normal range that's defined by inclusion of, say, 99% of the population at large, might be an inappropriate range for a population of elite athletes. Only those with tons of natural testosterone are likely to make it to a competition like the Tour de France. That said, I have no...

So I'm a couple weeks in and having fun with it. I just learned how to do o-goshi tonight and I gotta say, that's one powerful move. I wish I'd done this a long time ago. It's amazing how little karate helps. I'd even say it gets in the way, because my body keeps trying to move into familiar stances...

Consider the NHL, where diving is not only a penalty, it's punishable by a $1000 fine, even if it's detected after the fact on video review, even if the refs never detect it on the ice... and the league publishes a list of "divers" and posts it in every locker room.

I suppose one could ask the question would you rather be able to fight off 10 men and die at 40, or use your art for health and live to be 90.
Exactly.

You can use an adjustable dumbell. Load one side with a number of heavy plates, for example 3 tens and the other side, the side you will grasp, with a five. Grasp the five in the manner that Bill describes, the same way you'd grasp the lip of the jar. You will be carrying essentially a 40 # "j...

good judo

OK, so I'm finally taking the grapplers' advice and I'm going to take up judo. Any advice on what constitutes "good judo?" I have to assume that there are plenty of bad judo schools out there.

In spite of the recent spike in the number of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks involved in motorcycle accidents, there doesn't seem to have been a noticeable change in organ donation trends. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network ( http://www.optn.org ): 2005: 14,489 total or...

I think the Oliers need to be more phyiscally dominant. I'm all for letting Georges Laraque take the opening face off next game. I guess they listened to you... how about last night's game for physically dominant? Two more games like that, and there won't be any Hurricanes left to take the ice. Wha...
