Re: Kanei Uechi Kyohan on Ebay

The only comparable situation I can think of is the Canon of Judo by Mifune, the last 10th dan promoted by Judo's founder. It was translated and rewritten some 40 years after his death. This book was rare also. I am sure the originals still are. Some problems with the original translation from what ...

Re: Can You Not See??

Hi John, I know you asked me to visit to the forum, sorry its been so long. Maybe this is the topic you wanted to discuss? So as an attorney you might check out Lexus Nexus and read about one of the first tests of eminent domain that occurred on the Essex River in Massachusetts. I wrote about it in ...

Re: ALONG THE WAY

I really enjoyed reading this book about ten years ago. Good thing about getting old and forgetful is I can read it again now that I have forgotten so much. I remembered the Van comment as being "white on rice" I like "ugly on ape" that is great. You did a great job capturi...

Re: Kanei Uechi Kyohan on Ebay

To the best of my knowledge copyrights do not need to be reapplied for anymore. This may differ with different countries. You can copyright your book by sending a manuscript to yourself for example. I just put the copyright symbol in my book when I sent it off to the printer. A copyright would do no...

Re: Fartlek Kata performance

I do a lot of variety in partner training. First off I have a line face off against each other and do a kumite. Then everyone steps to the right and gets a new partner. Students on the end change to the other line. Higher ranks work the kumite lower ranks are working on and the size, age, gender etc...

Re: Fartlek Kata performance

Yes I don't think that method of breathing will suffice when a person is pushing speed in their kata or bunkai. It might have a place in slowing down the breathing during the "cooling" phase of Fartlek training. I don't know, I stopped doing it 25 years ago unless some sensei was looking f...

Re: Conditioning drills

I would say that for my 12-15 year old students hitting the breaking board both conditions their mind and their hand for hitting. There is clearly something psychological that a young person has to cross through to know they can strike a target when they need to. Once they realize they can hit somet...

Re: Conditioning drills

Yes I use the heavy bag on the ground and we drill shin kicks into it. We used that all the time in Van's class.

Re: Conditioning drills

In my classes I always try to have a "hit stuff" sequence at the end. Two students hold a heavy bag or pad and everyone else lines up and takes turns hitting things in either line. Having someone hold the pad is great because they can offer feedback on their power increase or decrease. I o...

Fartlek Kata performance

I just began running again and I have been looking at training routines to increase my mileage and prepare for racing. I ran a lot when I was younger and I am trying to be careful not to overtrain and injure myself with thoughts of my past glory. I immediately noticed myself not huffing and puffing ...

Re: Uechi-ryu kata start/end positions - What do you do?

I see the beginning and ending as more of a cultural thing than anything else. Watch Japanese in a busy center square or other public places and you will see them not invading others space. They allow a distance between each other. In Iaido we begin and end in the precise same place. You actually ha...

I discovered some of these videos while writing a paper on the trenches in WWI.

Re: Martial arts impact

Hello, Thanks for the replies. As I dig deeper into the paper I will comment on some of the aspects of training I find are useful in education. These may seem like "no brainers" to us, but its a good exercise I think to bring them out. One of the first I have written about in the paper is ...

Re: Martial arts impact

I do science every day now, and have learned to let the data from a well-constructed experiment do the talking. But lacking said data... all we have is expert opinion. Perfect. That is all that can be asked for. I really don't know if scientific research and numbers can be applied to something as f...
