I dont think it should matter as much as people try to make it though. The most important thing in a self defense situation is to stay alive, but whats the best way to do that? The way i see it is this. Usually the people who have a substantial backround are decient martial artists. For instance i am part of an orgonization called Uechi Ryu West.
