Re: Snowden

It's enough in my mind that I would worry about being mistreated if I did something to piss the government off enough to find an excuse to arrest me. Justin is growing up!!! < sniff... > :-D I always felt that way, it's just we had a president you liked much better at the time, so you blew it off a...

Re: Snowden

Let's delete the big post? I essentially agree about the wire-tapping. I don't think it's a big deal in and of itself, but I don't like the secrecy. I don't think it adds as much security as it adds potential for abuse. The government tends to want to keep everything secret these days, when really i...

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

Oh there's all sorts of crazy ideas seriously suggested that you can find if you go looking. My point was that at the very least it wasn't a popular enough idea that I had run into people seriously suggesting it without actively seeking it out. Interestingly, here's the first paragraph of the descri...

Snowden

I've got some reservations, but on balance I think he did a good thing and I'm rooting for him to evade prosecution. I'm generally positively-disposed towards whistleblowers, even if they break laws in the process.

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

For what it's worth, I have never in my life heard or read anyone expressing genuine fear of global cooling.

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

You misused the term strawman again (or made an obvious converse error) so I'm not interested in discussing that part of the argument anymore. Ironically, you immediately made a strawman of my argument (I never advocated immediately ceasing all carbon use) in the process. I think this pretty obvious...

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

I know you're not a huge fan of consensus, and disregarding the foolish editorial "40000 climate scientists can't be wrong" that the article puts in, this article still has some interest. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/may/16/climate-research-nearly-unanimous-humans-causes I'm ...

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

Such characterizations could easily be applied to medical research, where big pharma grant money is paying for a cover-up of the link between vaccinations and autism for example What has led you to believe there is a real link there? I did a lot of looking around (I hesitate to call it research in ...

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

I didn't say profit and ethics are mutually exclusive. However, while it may be true in some sense that it's better business to be ethical, wall street is notoriously short-sighted, and Monsanto in particular has a long history of misbehavior. I would say that being ethical *can* be good business (i...

Re: Genetically Modified Foods - Please watch this video!

The benefit to the end user is cost. I don't like Roundup-ready GMOs for a number of reasons, but cost is almost always the focus for the american consumer. We don't want quality, we want quantity. I think GMO has great potential to increase nutritional value and produce products that are genuinely ...

I'm not against all GMO foods, but I don't trust Monsanto in the slightest and I think they're a pretty terrible company, all things considered.

Re: You have 10 second. What do you see?

The whole thing sounds a little weird to me, but yeah, we weren't there. It seems strange that a dude in custody being questioned by 3+ police officers had to be shot, but stranger things have happened. More's the pity, since it's going to fuel conspiracy theorists. "Oh sure, he confessed verba...
