The 10,000 hours reminds me of an old Black Belt Magazine article about Tom Muzilla (don't remember if that's the correct spelling). His thing was pushing yourself to reach the next level through meditation and physical challenges. Anyway he said you didn't really break the threshold of understandin...

This is a response to one of my very first posts on the forum. If you cannot find Uechi right away, one option you may want to consider is to sign up for George Mattson's virtual dojo. It is designed for this very purpose and George is great! I hope things work out for you and your Uechi. Regards, V...

Yes Virginia, there are other Uechi Instructors!

All of my students really seemed to enjoy your visit. As you now know Uechi-Ryu is VERY rare in this part of the country. Other than myself, you are now probably the only other Uechi Instructor to teach in Hardin County (and possibly Kentucky), in the last 20-25yrs. One of the girl's asked a questio...

Excellent Trip.

My family and I returned from Kalamazoo on Wednesday. I must say that Master James Thompson was a sterling example of what we should all strive for as Uechi-Ka and individuals. We received a warm welcome to Kalamazoo and his dojo. My sons and I learned a great deal in the 3 training sessions we atte...

How to catch a Polar Bear

If you're ever in the Arctic, and feel the need to test your outdoor survival skills by capturing a Polar Bear, try this: First, cut a hole in the ice slightly larger than a polar bear. Next you will need a can of whole peas. Carefully sprinkle them all around the hole, then find a good hiding spot ...

just a thought.......

We should not look to sport karateka in open tournaments to dictate how we do our art. True. Having said that, my students and I don't have many "outlets" in this area. So on occassion, I let my students know if there is a local tournament going on. Then a couple of weeks before the tourn...

Tournament #2

I just got back from watching 3 of my students compete in an open martial arts tournament. The good news is, none of them were scolded for grabbing. :D However, one of them used some good shin and downblocks, and his opponent was soon hesitant to kick with his preferred kick (a right roundhouse). He...

Thanks for the info

Absolutely, positively, do not miss going to the dojo of Jim Thompson. He is one of two or three national treasures of Uechi Ryu in this country. It's difficult to describe the combination of humility, experience (in the Futenma dojo with Kanei Uechi), insight, athleticism, and wisdom that he bring...

Things to do in Kalamazoo?

I'm planning a trip to Kalamazoo, MI during the first week of October. I was just curious if anyone else had visited there and had a "Don't Miss" list of places to dine, parks, things to do (other than the obvious Uechi stuff  ), etc.
