At first it was just centred solely upon sanchin ,and the need to loosen up never was really a factor that entered this training equation , although with time the underlying basis for kicks emerged into my conscious thought ,in a method that appeared miles distant from systematic kick training as w...

Excellent point Max. Years ago, I was kinda OCD about being stretched and ready to go at tournaments. When I went to one recently, I thought "What would you do if attacked on the street without time for a warm-up. So I pretty much stopped worrying about it. Which is a good thing considering how...

Many very interesting points. There's a lot of info to digest and consider. Thanks for the in-depth response. The junbi undo are warm-up exercises. One should not be doing stretching until one is properly warmed up. Although these may be warm-up exercises, it seems to me they also include stretches ...

Years ago I asked Dr. Bill to research the Uechi warm-up exercises and recommend a more "updated" set for those of us who would like a better way to begin our classes. I must admit before I started the thread, I checked a certain individual's Asian Arts website, but was dissapointed to se...

Hey Bert, do you remember the way we did sit-ups in class in the mid-1980s, while sitting in seiza? Glenn Yes I remember. Never had any problems, but then again I visited Ihor Rymaruk's dojo in Schenectady NY in 86 just after receiving my Sho-Dan. Ihor saw me doing it as a warm-up, and apparently wa...

Very Interesting

So before I go about stating my personal experiences and the results of my research, I caution everyone about defending what may be the indefensible. There's no "tradition" associated with the junbi undo. They're merely a bunch of 60's era PE exercises for Japanese grammar school students....

"Healthy" Warm Up Exercises

Over the years I've used a variety of warm-up exercises, from the traditional junbi-undo, to less traditional sport like stretches and exercises. Through my research and education, I've been exposed to many views on what stretches are good, what is harmful, etc. One thing's for sure, there are a lot...

In fact to me such discussions seem to dominate the forum now, what has decreased is discussions about martial arts. I must say I remain silent when it comes to the threads on political issues (or many other non-martial arts issues). Most I don't even bother to read. If I do browse through them, I ...

Home is where your kata is.

I love the more private area My students and I train in (a Church Gymnasium). However over the years I've become comfortable doing kata in a variety of public settings indoors and out. Some of my favorite "me time" is finding an empty or mostly empty Aerobics or Kickboxing studio in my loc...

TKD and Karate students competed together and afterwards, celebrated and partied together. I must say, although we were the only non-TKD students there, I received many compliments. I was complimented on my kata. Many said they liked it, and they had never seen it before. My opponent in sparring an...
