Me Too!!
Chernon: As always, Ms. Sheets offers a very insightful answer. I am also very fearful of falling, and the Dan Kumite take down had for years exacerbated that fear. I suppose it didn’t help that my original Uechi teacher, Johnny Author, taught on a concrete pad thinly covered with indoor outdoor car...

But Maybe That's The Answer
Van: But what if, “it's in our kata” is the answer? Many of the defenses against a rear choke attack begin with getting one's body behind the attacker using a step that looks remarkably like a step used in San Chin. Many of the defenses involve hammering the back of a hand with a pointy thing like a...

Add Pullover While You Are Working On It
Several of the folks who train with me have used the women's gi from JUKA Dragon. They appreciated the amazing technical innovations, like darts in the gi top. I have used a BuJin gi, with the fast dry fabric, and love it. It does seem to shrink in an odd manner though, and the ties seem to wear out...

Not Too Hurtful
Ms. Vicki: It was great seeing you as well. My only regret from camp is that Sue and Harry didn’t get a chance to show their master level trivial pursuit skills. My friends Som, Henry, Ken, Wil and Wendy had a great time. It seemed that every time I checked on Henry he was partnered with Art Rebesa,...

And the Sacramento Art Work
And I have to applaud his choice of art work. The tiger, dragon, crane circle was created by Erin O'Toole, one of our black belts, for the Sacramento Uechi dojo. I always find it fascinating to see how far her art work has spread.

Good Work
Well, I was wondering why you were being so quiet. Now I know. Sleep deprivation. Good work. I know he will always be surrounded by love and a sense of life's possibilities. My best to you both.

I just turn
Great discussion. It's always good to have Rick weigh in on a topic. Dana asked how do I turn, and so the answer to that is, I just turn. But, if you were asking me how do I teach it, the answer would be as a series of transitional stances. I also like Bill's insight from Aikido, and it is very simi...

Coming Back
Wow. I had a great time. This camp was fun, informative, and a good place to be. From George and Susan’s welcome, to the my last seminar, with Art Rabesa (whose book on Explosive Karate I will now have to reread) it was just a wonderful experience. Al Wharton’s Seichin bunkai alone was worth the pri...

Face Conditioning
Dana: Taking your liability issue first, in many states anyone holding themselves out to have some skill and knowledge in Uechi, who drops by to train in Uechi, would have a fairly high assumption of the risk hurdle to clear if they are injured in a class. This assumes that no one is the class is ac...

I Agree
Dana: I thought there would be more responses to this post, but maybe it is so axiomatic that one must move from the center that it prompted as little attention as noting one must also breath. But you would think with all the discussion we have on how to breath, moving from the center would also gen...

Me Too!
Dana: That's exactly what I did when working with my teacher Charles Earle. He loved arm rubbing, but my arms gave out way before his. I know Mr. Fisher in your dojo also has a love for arm rubbing, and is very good at it. I know many dojos today skip over arm rubbing, but since arm rubbing and poun...

You mean I'm not?
Well you have cetainly burst my bubble on the whole sword thing Joe. Charles had us use a shinai for safety purposes, not because he or anyone else for that matter ever thought the sword attack was particularly realistic (and if you have ever been on the receiving end of a Kendo strike, you know how...

Good Catch Rick
Good call on the thrust Rick. Rob, I have two suggestions for helping to correct the thrust (1) use the bushiken hand position on the thrust, that is bring your thumb across the palm; and (2) squeeze the thumb and fingers at the point of focus. With the thumb pulling across the palm, its harder to t...

Sorry Norm
Sorry Norm, I know the feeling. Both as a guitar hack and as a karate student. And TSD Guy, you picked a great photo. The man revolutionized the electric guitar and left us way too early. But, back to your comment Norm about being self taught and not knowing...as karate students, we are all self tau...
