street wise grappling

Fred, I look forward to seeing you on Saturdays. I can show you how to apply the triange so that the opponent's mouth is covered to minimize the risk of getting bit.

street wise grappling

Fred, you had asked if I would use the triangle choke from the guard position if I were a bouncer (which I was , for Brothers Security out of Brockton for about three years. The answer is yes I would. I would if I were put in a situation where using that technique would be the best option at the tim...

street wise grappling

Fred, I'm a little confused. If the triangle choke evolved from sport Judo, which I'm sure it did...how was it found to be ineffective on the battlefield at a much earlier date? I feel that there are pros and cons to every martial arts technique. All techniques have a list of weaknesses...does this ...

Ground "Kumite"

Mike, thank you for your response. I wanted this two-person kata to be as reality based as possible, so I plugged in two takedowns that didn’t require a person to wear a gi top to be held onto. What are the best, and most simple, judo-Aikido-Nihon Jiu Jitsu takedowns, that will work in a situation w...

Ground "Kumite"

Fred, checked out the judo site...it is great. Gene, thanks for the lesson. Makes a lot of sense. It's for self defense period. Especialy the take-downs You said, "Maybe you'll see that a different lock or pin or finish or start position might be better here or there. However, that is solely up...

Ground "Kumite"

Yes Rich, the kimura and ude garami are one and the same. The American shoulder lock is also known as the key-lock or "paint-brush-lock. It's the reverse of the kimura. You can get it from the mount, side-mount, or standing. As for confusing japanese or Portugese terminology...I say get rid of ...

Ground "Kumite"

Fred, thank you very much. I wasn't sure what to call it. I'm not quite up to peed on judo terminology. Could you tell me what newaza means? I realize that I haven't created anything new under the sun. I'm hoping this kata will give my beginner grapplers a foundation, like sanchin, to work with as t...

Ground "Kumite"

Hey Mike, and others interested in the grappling arts or cross-training in BJJ, I posted this on Van's forum. What do you think? I finaly did it. I created a kumite that students can practice that will give them the basics the ground skills that can be added to the Uechi that they already have.. I w...

grappling and kids.

Hey everybody, meet the future of Uechi-Ryu.
Sounds like a class I wouldn't mind taking. What do your sparring classes look like, especially the children's? I bet there are a lot of takedowns, and lots of grappling to follow.

change

Mike, it seems like in The Uechi-Ryu system change is very bad. Techniques, stances, and katas go for many decades without being "disturbed." I don't believe this is a very good thing for a system. In brazilian jiujitsu, change and evolution of technique is everything. If you practice one ...

mini tourney??? for fun and training.

Jim, the training is going well, thanks for asking. I am still working on getting my cardio to the proper level for an NHB so I am looking forward to a lot of mat time. I am hoping to make it up there one of these Sundays. Joe P. Ps, is it ok for me to train in just shorts and a T-shirt, just becaus...

mini tourney??? for fun and training.

Joe P. here, Sounds graet T, where do I sign up? Anything that can be done to bring the people of our great organization together to train, learn, and grow...I'm all for. If anything, I believe the Uechi-Ryu instructiors would benefit from an event-training day like this in order to give their stude...

good technique or not?

Joe P. here, thanks Mike. Mike, I think a great technique is one that a person gets to know intimately through much experimentation and practice. I few techniques immediately come to mind right now. These techniques are both striking and grappling. I feel as if I can successfuly apply these techniqu...
