Chinese - Japanese - Korean Styles

Ah, woops, I thought one thing and said another. Yeah I remember now that Batto ryu was used by the military officers, very cold cut techniques. The earliest Ryu (of Kenjutsu) was Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, a sect of katori shinto founded by a man who according to legend locked himself in a t...

I believe the first ryu may have been Batto-Ryu kenjutsu. Katori-Shinto is definitely old, but Batto Ryu is either just as old or slightly older. But, as usualy I may be wrong.

Hoshin, I'm pretty sure Koryu means old (or something similar) Like the Koryu kata in Iaido are the original katas that the seitei katas are made from, the koryu are the original and the setei are new ones, just sort of there to introduce the student to Iaido technique. Are you saying that koryu mar...

HEY MAN DON'T DIS IAIDO http://www.xpres.net/~gmattson/ubbs/wink.gif http://www.xpres.net/~gmattson/ubbs/biggrin.gif lol I definitely see your point, but I very much agree with what Ted said, the quote from Funakoshi. I believe it was "Windsong" Blake sensei who said that in kata you shoul...

At first glance this may appear similar, but the main point is that if there was no one to fight, or no real direct application of your martial arts skills...would you still practice? Jorvik, Good reply, if there wasn't any social aspect, only you in a (just an example) temple, alone, would you stil...

My thoughts exactly, however, would anyone care to disagree?

Heres a question sparked by the twilight zone. If you were the last human on the earth, would you still practice karate. If there was no point in self defense or anything, would it matter? I sure as heck would...what about you? -David [This message has been edited by dominiuno (edited July 07, 2002).]

Best way to keep our young ones intrested?

Well, the strategy with baseball is probably very effective. However, I would refrain from forcing your son. My father never forced me to do Karate...and I soon discovered the joys of it for myself, and that makes all the difference, I fell in love with it. My brother, who was forced to do it, wasn'...

Im just wondering, what did you think of the more "repetitive" katas (I know in Goju Ryu Sanchin is similar [kindof] to that of Uechi Ryu Sanchin) What did you think of sanchin when you learnt it? Or did you spend more time on technique? -David [This message has been edited by dominiuno (e...

Leg Positioning

I don't think sanchin would be sanchin anymore if it was a static position. The bend in the knees is absolutely critical....but is it critical to bend them enough to block a football kick coming up to the groin?

Just Wondering

Leg Positioning

In Sanchin Dachi how do you place your legs? Do you bend your knees to block your groin? If the reason is that if someone might do a football kick and kick you in the groin, wouldn't it be very easy to block it? Isn't it a natural reaction for most guys to block there? Isn't that a VERY early lesson...

While taking sunsu8's survey "what about YOU" I reflected on how simple advanced practitioners make the moves look. I began wondering, are the moves truly that simple and it's just that we somehow make the moves hard? Is THAT the fight against ourselves, to let ourself see how simple it re...
