There's a nice concept in marketing (courtesy of a WIRED writer) that I think is useful here. It is the long-tail. http://www.leftclick.com/images/illustrations/long-tail.png Think of the long tail as a variation of the two sides of the standard deviation: http://globotrends.pbworks.com/f/1225833792...

It is clear that the kata performer has extremely powerful legs. All that being said...isn't that kata an oar kata? I wish I had a program that would stick a bo or an oar between his two hands. I think it would clearly show how many of the step-through, palm change, and drop-your-center movements wo...

Sequential summation of joint motion isn't chi. I'll poo-poo that one. :D Sequential summation of joint motion is li. Yi-->Chi-->Li (Intent -->Energy/Pressure-->Muscle Power) Yi (mindfulness), Chi (internal energy) and Li (physical force expression/external power) Now that we measure all electrical ...

You've got me completely flummoxed as to how you throw either a shomen geri or a uechi sokuto geri without using the knee joint.

I maintain scatological neutrality. :D Ideally every technique is performed at the optimal distance with the least wasted movement and cleanest projection of power. ♫Dream a little dream....♫ I think there are two discussions going on here that muddy the water. I had posted with regards to le...

The only reasons the hinge motion would damage a joint are 1) if the practitioner is letting the movement go to the point that the joint locks and the joint itself is the break for an accelerating technique or 2) if the power is being thrown at an angle inconsistent with how the joint is meant to mo...

The shear is in the angle you hit across the knee. If you kick forward into the knee crease or stomp downward on the knee crease that is one thing. Focusing the kick across the knee creates the shear I'm talking about. It is a joint destruction approach rather than a focus on triggering the collapse...

The way I was taught this kick, the knee points at what you want to hit and the kick is a simple hinge movement from the knee. You point your knee at what you want to hit and use the blade edge of the foot instead of the toe. The primary reason, as I understand it, is that instead of the straight pe...

I didn't say they weren't there, I said those two show the possibilities in a more dramatic way than the other forms.

"the only kata that dramatically show..."

For most of the world, the sanchin turn in sanchin kata is not a dramatic representation of 8-sided footwork.

(Not that I'm saying anything anybody hasn't heard before.) I think it is vastly preferable to turn the axis of the gap (mae) through footwork so that when I connect, my hips (centerline) face through my opponent's open gates, meaning where they don't have feet, instead of facing the opponent head-o...

Happy Mother's Day!

Mysterious joy pervades me; from my pillow I rise to look out on the starry night; And dreams float in upon its mystic billow; Of infinite joy in my progeny's future life. O miracle of motherhood!

That's a bummer. I'm in the same boat as the the IE log files are locked to save to the administrator folder. 8O And so my need for Firefox was born. Sadly, Goggle Chrome chats back to Google so we can't use. Anyway, I digress. Other required reading: http://www.utne.com/2005-01-01/betrayed-by-the-a...
