Welcome Back John Thurston

Post by gmattson »

John's been away from the forums for awhile but emailed me yesterday asking that his forum be re-activated.

It was never down John! We need you to get some action here.

Hello All:

I have missed you and missed writing on the forum. However, I had two broken ankles and what the French would call "Cafard" with respect to MA.

My right foot is titanium in many parts and another operation is due on the left January 28, 2013.

This is off my beaten track, but when you have a Senior loose his school, and literally act as though you do not care, it hurts, it hurts a lot.

I am not sure if I will be able to go back to my workouts. It depends on what the Doctor says.

I REALLY appreciated Darrin Sensei's friendship and GEM's warmth of greeting. About 4 years ago we started a discussion about the "first record of a battle" that of "Kadesh" and I will be returning to that subject. I purchased a book in a rare books store in Vermont and, although Egyptian and some Biblical sources say that the battle was won by the Egyptians, the author in this case came to a different conclusion.

Fred has always kidded me about buying so many books instead of saving my money and going to the Library, I defy him with respect, at least, to find an 1857 Bible and this volume on Egyptian warfare (first edition). Libraries chuck a lot of things that the "general public" do not read and much of my valued volumes are from discard tables at the Ventress Library in Marshfield.

I also ask for questions on any military topic.

One funny point is that we know the "sickle sword" (copper or bronze) was used in Bronze Age conflict, I am unsure that it is agreed upon which edge was used for cutting-maybe both were.

A moving historical account on the "interactions" between the 6th Gallica legion and the Apostle Paul. They were serendipity bound to save Paul's life at leat twice, and he saved the lives of the Detachment detailed to escort him from Rome. It gets convoluted. A cult in the South allows themselves to be bitten by poisonous snakes as Paul was bitten by a viper on the island he and his escort were marooned upon on the way across the "Med" to Rome. He suffered no ill effects and I recall one adherent of the sect saying; "if you ain't living right, you will die". that is an interest double entendre.

So hello for my first brief entry and I hope to talk to all again soon.
