Islamophobia

Post by Akil Todd Harvey »

I am quite sure that many here will come to this thread with the same sarcastic attitude that so many important topics have been treated over the years. This lack of seriousness to discuss some really serious issues is precisely why I wont be here to discuss much of this with you.......

I deal with sufficient Islamophobic rhethoric on a regualr basis already, thanks.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamophobia
Islamophobia is fear and/or hatred of Islam, Muslims or Islamic culture. Islamophobia encompasses the belief that Islam promotes religious fanaticism, violent tendencies towards non-Muslims, terrorism and rejects concepts such as equality, tolerance, democracy and human rights. It is viewed as a new form of racial prejudice whereby Muslims, an ethno-religious group, not a race, are nevertheless constructed as a race. A set of negative assumptions are made of the entire group to the detriment of members of that group. How new it is, in the historic light of The Crusades, is debatable and could be as old as the 11th or even 8th Century AD.

The term most often appears in discourse on the condition of immigrant Muslims living as minorities in the United States, Europe, and Australia, although it has also been used in recent years in countries such as India, and occasionally in connection with non-immigrant Muslim communities or individuals. In the most prominent cases, however, experiences of immigrant communities of unemployment, rejection, alienation and violence have combined with Islamophobia to make integration particularly difficult[13]. This has led, in the United Kingdom, for example, to Muslim communities suffering higher levels of unemployment, poor housing, poor health and levels of racially motivated violence than other communities[14]
.
Islamophobia, as a phenomenon, dates back to the initial expansion of Islam and grew as a result of the crusades. It has been argued that Islamophobia exists outside the West, for example in India. This is more closely related to Communal Politics in India, although Islamophobia in India does share, with western Islamophobia, the denigration of Islamic culture and history[15].

Given the strong association between Arabs and the religion of Islam, Islamophobia is often expressed as a form of anti-Arab racism, though not all Arabs are Muslim and the majority of Muslims are not Arab. Anti-Muslim bias has occasionally been expressed in violent attacks on Sikhs who were mistaken for Muslims on account of their distinctive turbans.

Reasons for Islamophobia

Islamophobia has been increased in western societies, due to the linking of all members of the Muslim faith with the small numbers of violent Islamist movements.

It has been argued by some, most notably Edward Said, that the denigration of Islamic civilisation associated with Islamophobia is central to the concept of Western Civilisation. The ousting and marginalising of Islam marks the debut of ‘Western’ Civilisation and, thus, explains the depth and longevity of western Islamophobia:

“Islam was a provocation in many ways. It lay uneasily close to Christianity, geographically and culturally. It drew on the Judeo-Hellenic traditions. It borrowed creatively from Christianity - it could boast unrivalled military and political successes. Nor was this all. The Islamic lands sit adjacent to and even on top of the biblical lands. Moreover, the heart of the Islamic domain has always been the region closest to Europe... Arabic and Hebrew are Semitic languages, and together they dispose and re-dispose of material that is urgently important to Christianity. From the end of the 7th century to the 16th century, Islam in either its Arab, Ottoman, North African or Spanish form dominated or effectively threatened European Christianity. That Islam outstripped and outshone Rome cannot have been absent from the mind of any European." Edward Said[16]

Anti Islamophobia efforts

Recently there have been several efforts by non-Muslims to combat Islamophobia. In the wake of September 11, for example, a few non-Muslim women wore a hijab in a show of solidarity with their Muslim counterparts, whom it was feared would be particularly vulnerable for reprisal given their distinctive dress. Non-Muslims also helped form community watches to protect mosques from attack.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently organised a conference with the topic of Islamophobia and Anti-Americanism: Causes and Remedies which touches on the issue of Islamophobia. Guest speakers include those from several American universities, Amnesty International and former Deputy Premier of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim.

Examples of Islamophobic Quotes

• La Shawn Barber: "Despite what they may say, Muslims are and have always been on a mission to conquer and kill infidels. They’ve been doing it for centuries and will continue until we’re all dead, or they’re all dead, or the world ends, whichever comes first. We need to get over ourselves and focus on stopping the spread of Islamofascism. Period. Save civility and Koran “handling” for less perilous times."[17]

• Rep. C. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA): "Just turn (the sheriff) loose and have him arrest every Muslim that crosses the state line" (to Georgia law officers, November 2001)[18]

Ann Coulter: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."[19]

• Will Cummins: "It is the black heart of Islam, not the black face, to which millions object." [20]

• Nick Griffin: "It [Islam] is a menace to all we in the West hold dear, and the time when anyone can pretend otherwise is almost at an end." [21]

• Robert Kilroy-Silk: "Muslims everywhere behave with equal savagery. They behead criminals, stone to death female - only female - adulteresses, throw acid in the faces of women who refuse to wear the chador, mutilate the genitals of young girls and ritually abuse animals"[22]

• Jean-Marie Le Pen: "These elements have a negative effect on all of public security. They are strengthened demographically both by natural reproduction and by immigration, which reinforces their stubborn ethnic segregation, their domineering nature. This is the world of Islam in all its aberrations."[23]

• Arlene Peck: "Most of the Muslims reaching the U.S. refuse to learn our language and take over our neighborhoods with their codes of dress and education. Then, they pressure the residents, as they did in Dearborn, Michigan, to leave by razing the churches and putting mosques in their places, displacing the local delis with Middle Eastern food. The Arabic signs go up and another neighborhood bites the dust. Now, everyone can be serenaded five times a day with loudspeakers calling them to prayer. Fast learners, they are now armed with the knowledge of how to beat us with bullets and ballots." [24]

• Melanie Phillips: "Thousands of alienated young Muslims, most of them born and bred here but who regard themselves as an army within, are waiting for an opportunity to help to destroy the society that sustains them."[25]

• Jerry Vines: "Christianity was founded by the virgin-born Jesus Christ. Islam was founded by Mohammed, a demon-possessed paedophile who had 12 wives, and his last one was a 9-year-old girl."[26]

Runnymede Trust definition

The Runnymede Trust has identified eight components that they say define Islamophobia. This definition, from the 1997 document ‘Islamophobia: A Challenge For Us All’ is widely accepted, including by the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia. The eight components are:

1. Islam is seen as a monolithic bloc, static and unresponsive to change.

2. Islam is seen as separate and 'other'. It does not have values in common with other cultures, is not affected by them and does not influence them.

3. Islam is seen as inferior to the West. It is seen as barbaric, irrational, primitive and sexist.

4. Islam is seen as violent, aggressive, threatening, supportive of terrorism and engaged in a 'clash of civilisations'.

5. Islam is seen as a political ideology and is used for political or military advantage.

6. Criticisms made of the West by Islam are rejected out of hand.

7. Hostility towards Islam is used to justify discriminatory practices towards Muslims and exclusion of Muslims from mainstream society.

8. Anti-Muslim hostility is seen as natural or normal.

Islamophobia is not an excuse for senseless violence like occurred last week in London..........

The bombings were wrong and those who perpetrated need justice to be done to them.......

Nor are the London Bombings sufficient justification for demonizing the vast majority of Peaceful Muslims, whether in jest or by deed.......

Muslims have been told that it is their responsibility to stop the terrorists in their midsts........We will work together with the authorities to do what is right (putting down all forms of oppression, including and especially Islamofascism)..........

Despite the considerable assistance the Muslim community has given in stopping terrorism, we continue to get demonized along the way...........

Some of you are gonna quickly retort that there are few Muslims helping in the "war on terror", to which I respond, and how many prisoners can the americans interrogate without their Muslim interpreters (certainly some would be Christian as well)? ?????.........

And the US is trying to put together an army to combat the terrorists, right? Most of those folks are Muslims...........duh? Make up your mind, we either cant be trusted or we are a valuable ally........How can we both be called to fight the war on terror and simultaneously, our allegiances are put in question at every turn.........

At the National Press Club news conference, CAIR will present the 30-second PSA featuring American Muslims stating: “We often hear claims Muslims don't condemn terrorism and that Islam condones violence. As Muslims, we want to state clearly that those who commit acts of terror in the name of Islam are betraying the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad. We reject anyone of any faith - who commits such brutal acts and will not allow our faith to be hijacked by criminals. Islam is not about hatred and violence. It's about peace and justice.” BETA copies of the PSAs, produced by West Glen Communications, will be available at the news conference. The PSA campaign ties into CAIR's "Not in the Name of Islam" online petition drive designed to disassociate the faith of Islam from the violent acts of a few Muslims. The following is what we expect more of in the coming days (islamophobia). So while you folks are concerned about Islamofascists (like us), I hope you folks arent out perpetrating.......
CAIR-FL: Probe Vandalism, Mosque Urges FBI
Source: Miami Herald

Members of a West Kendall mosque on Tuesday called a weekend rock-throwing incident a ''hate crime'' and demanded an FBI investigation, saying it was the second time in a year that the Islamic Center of Miami had been targeted. The incident occurred about 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Aous Aweda left the Islamic school to get a cup of coffee with a friend. He returned 30 minutes later to an empty parking lot and a dark entrance. As the friends approached the mosque at 11699 SW 147th Ave., they noticed the glass door was shattered. A large rock sat about 25 feet away from the door. Afraid that an intruder might be inside, Aweda called police, who found no one around. . .

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, based in Washington, D.C., is urging the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “I'm seeing a trend with an increase of anti-Muslim incidences in South Florida,” said Altaf Ali, executive director of the council. “The perpetrators are getting more brave. The first act was 50 yards away from the mosque, now they got closer to the place of worship.” Ali is referring to another incident that occurred a year ago at the mosque. A Nazi swastika patch was stuck and the f-word painted on the school's sign near 147th Avenue. (MORE)

Unequal Protection: Executive Summary

Post by Akil Todd Harvey »

"True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else."
-- Clarence Darrow

Nearly four years removed from the 9/11 terror attacks, the greatest tragedy to befall our nation in modern history, our country has learned certain lessons that will hopefully lead us to a stronger, safer and more vibrant society for people of all races, faiths and cultures.

Since the 9/11 attacks, the most disturbing legal trend is the growing disparity in how American Muslims are being treated under the law on many different levels.

In order to fully understand the status of civil rights in the post-9/11 era, it is essential that this report offer a documented historical overview of major federal law enforcement initiatives, high-profile national cases and statistical evidence of anti-Muslim discrimination in the United States, particularly those incidents that occurred during the last calendar year of 2004.

In 2004, CAIR processed a total of 1,522 incident reports of civil rights cases compared to 1,019 cases reported to CAIR in 2003. This constitutes a 49 percent increase in the reported cases of harassment, violence and discriminatory treatment from 2003 and marks the highest number of Muslim civil rights cases ever reported to CAIR in our eleven year history.

In addition, CAIR received 141 reports of actual and potential violent anti-Muslim hate crimes, a 52 percent increase from the 93 reports received in 2003.

Overall, 10 states alone accounted for almost 79 percent of all reported incidents to CAIR in 2004. These ten states include: California (20.17%), New York (10.11%), Arizona (9.26%), Virginia (7.16%), Texas (6.83%), Florida (6.77%), Ohio (5.32%), Maryland (5.26%), New Jersey (4.53%) and Illinois (2.96%).

There have also been decreases, both in real and proportional terms, in certain categories from the previous year as well. For example, workplace discrimination complaints to CAIR constituted nearly 23 percent of complaints in 2003. In 2004, the number of workplace discrimination complaints decreased to almost 18 percent of the total complaints.

In addition, complaints involving governmental agencies decreased from 29 percent in 2003 to 19 percent in 2004. Internet harassment of American Muslims also decreased from 7 percent of total complaints in 2003 to less than 1 percent of total reported complaints in 2004.

By far the greatest increase from last year, in both real and proportional terms, occurred in the area of unreasonable arrests, detentions, searches/seizures and interrogations.

In 2003, complaints concerning law enforcement techniques accounted for only 7 percent of all reported incidents. In 2004, however, these reports rose to almost 26 percent of all reported cases to CAIR.

Although not a scientific study, there are several factors which may have contributed to the increase in total number of reports to CAIR over the past year. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. An ongoing and lingering atmosphere of fear since the September 11 attacks against American Muslims, Arabs and South Asians;

2. The growing use of anti-Muslim rhetoric by some local and national opinion leaders;

3. Local Muslim communities, through the opening of new CAIR chapters and regional offices, now have more mechanisms to monitor and report incidents to CAIR at the grassroots level;

4. Following the infamous legacy of the USA PATRIOT Act, other federal legislation and policies which severely infringe on the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans continue to be passed;

5. Increased public awareness about civil liberties and the impact of federal law enforcement initiatives on constitutional and civil rights.

In our conclusion, CAIR recommends that further congressional inquiries, inspector general reports from federal agencies and impact litigation continue to be used to ensure that the civil and legal rights of all Americans are never placed in jeopardy again.

Akil, I'm also concerned how the Islamic world treats Christians, Jews and other infidels. Sorry my friend but your argument is too narrow in scope and too self serving. When the majority of Muslims start walking the walk and beat the bushes to remove the cancer from their religion I'll jump up and down and pat you on the back.

Mike,
Akil, I'm also concerned how the Islamic world treats Christians, Jews and other infidels.
couldnt tell from your posts .......this could as much be my fault as yours.....not pointing fingers, just making an observation
Sorry my friend but your argument is too narrow in scope and too self serving.
thanks for dismissing my arguments without actually referring to the arguments themselves. your lack of actual debate will be noted.

note: you followed one of the eight components of Islamophobia perfectly.......
6. Criticisms made of the West by Islam are rejected out of hand.

be well, mike.....(post editied to eliminate nastiness and lack of patience on my part).......

Sadly Tony some Muslims are getting a taste of that medicine, in Iraq. The bastards are going out of their way to kill women and children. Now the question is, where is the outrage over that? Where are the people yelling jihad and issuing Fatwahs against those maggots who kill women and children?

Far right and football gangs plot 'revenge'

Police monitor anti-Muslim websites
Hugh Muir
Friday July 15, 2005

Guardian
Plans by an alliance of rightwing extremists and football hooligans to exact "revenge" on Muslims after last week's bomb attacks are being monitored by police.

The Guardian has learned that extremists are keen to cause widespread fear and injury with attacks on mosques and high-profile "anti-Muslim" events in the capital.

Football hooligans communicating over the internet have spoken of the need to put aside partisan support for teams and unite against Muslims. Hooligans from West Ham, Millwall, Crystal Palace and Arsenal are among those seeking to establish common cause.

As part of wider plans to generate a backlash, rightwing groups such as the Nationalist Alliance and the National Front are said to be planning marches. Extremists hope to hold a march along Victoria Embankment in London tomorrow.

It is also known that many mosques have received bomb threats since the attacks.

Attempts by the right to make capital out of the tragedy have created a powderkeg. Already extremist Islamist websites have told Muslims to be ready to retaliate.

The BNP has sought to capitalise on the atrocities by reproducing a picture of the bombed No 30 bus with the headline "Maybe Now It's Time To Listen To The BNP" in its byelection literature in Barking, Essex.

The tactic prompted cross-party condemnation. Though it was designed to increase support for the far-right, many believe the message may have been too crass and too badly timed to work. The party does, however, enjoy some support in the area.

Gerry Gable, of the anti-fascist organisation Searchlight, said: "There is no doubt that the far-right are playing this for all they think it is worth. If you look at the BNP website there's Nick Griffin saying 'be calm' and other material saying 'don't get angry, get even!'"

He added: "These things should be taken seriously. One site, Blood and Honour, had a posting about a mosque in the Wirral and soon after the mosque was hit. Soon after, the posting was taken down."

The police have pledged to crack down on any attempts to provoke division in the aftermath of the bombs. Members of Scotland Yard's independent advisory group have been asked to liaise with borough commanders in the capital to reassure the public and make sure the police carry out their pledges. The Met has said from the outset that the bombs were an attack on all communities and that none should be scapegoated.

The synergy between rightwing extremists and football hooligans is not new. Throughout the 1980s, some of the biggest clubs in Britain were plagued by notoriously violent and racist followers.

Though virtually all clubs have since challenged the behaviour of extremist fans, and almost all now belong to the Kick Racism Out of Football initiative, violent followers continue to communicate with each other and supporters from other clubs to engineer confrontations.

The prospect of the opening day Championship fixture between Leeds and Millwall in August is already causing concern.
