First we need the deep snow to track them and slow them down.

Moose I might use a naginata.

But with 5 million Rob we can use a helicopter and automatic rifles. 8)

If your growing moss you have a high acid soil in that area.
Nope... Got that covered. I put lime down every fall.

Methinks I've solved the problem. I have soil with a very high clay content. For several years I softened it with gypsum to get the water to drain better, and was able to build a layer of topsoil from scratch. I stopped putting the gypsum down, and (perhaps not so coincidentally) I started having problems. Water would mysteriously collect in places. Low lying areas would stop growing grass. The biggest problems with the moss was the dark areas.

I just got finished putting a whole schitload of gypsum down. Yes, I also threw a little more lime down in the mossy areas, but I also got some other stuff in there as well that pisses the moss off (potash, iron, magnesium, etc.).

We shall see. I'll report on how things work out.

You might still have a problem with acid in that area, might be worth getting a soil test.

I've been trying to grow moss in my japanese garden area and keep getting grass.

Isn't that just the way the world works?

True that.

I have my own pH meter for the soil. I can spot-measure.

The pH is actually much higher than it was when I first moved on the property. The natural tendency is for soil to be acid where I am, but a yearly treatment with calcium carbonate does the trick.

No... I had it right and then things deteriorated. It took a little research and some thinking to come to the conclusion that I have.

It is true that moss likes acid soil. But it also likes moisture, dark, a lack of key (mineral) nutrients, and compacted soil. You might ponder that as you work on the moss in your garden.

Sometimes when you're trying to grow something exotic, you'll kill it by treating the plant the way most plants like to be treated. I spent hundreds of bucks on my mountain laurels before I finally got some to grow on my east-facing slope. One of the most important things I learned to do is NOT fertilize it. I let them get a bit of the fall fertilizer that the lawn gets, and that's it. Now they're happy, and they bloom every year.

As for my moss... I already have the pH right. I can't change the light and I can't change the moisture. But I can get the drainage back by starting back with the regular gypsum treatments. And I just added some more lime that also has a broad spectrum of minerals in it. It's sort of like a mixture of lime and Ironite.

Again... I'll let you know how it works out.
