Is this still a forum?

Post by TSDguy »

I used to post here regularly 20 years ago when I was young and stupid and knew very little (but had a LOT of muscles!) I progressed from TSD to ATA and WTF TKD to Judo to Western Boxing, Muay Thai, dabbled in JJJ, BJJ, Kali/Escrima, just about everything.

Obviously I have some free time now. I thought I'd check this place out again. I see the posts are not often, but I wonder if people still frequent this place?

Edit: Also I love my choice of avatar from twenty years ago. It's still kinda hot!

Hi! "Frequent" is a bit of a stretch, but I do check it periodically.

Hi Glenn! You're actually one of the people I remember posting here!

I'm not sure a good way to ask this but are the old posters still alive? Bill, Van, etc.?

As far as I know yes. Van still moderates and posts to his Self Defense Realities forum on this site. Sadly other forms of social media such as Facebook have usurped these older forums. Bill for example stepped away from this forum in 2017 to focus solely on his Facebook page and this forum has largely dried up as a result, although content here had already decreased quite a bit by then. Other factors such as changing interests and politics likely have played roles as well.

Bullcrap. . . Just that you guys are getting too old to fight with Glasheen. I see him on F.B., where I see him going head to head with younger and tougher opponents, all the while, projecting to millions of his fans, how smart he is. According to the pundits, you guys just weren't in his league! Of course, neither was I! :)

Interesting. I just checked how many people are on the forums right now:

Who is online In total there are 23 users online :: 0 registered, 1 hidden and 22 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)
Most users ever online was 607 on 29 Jul 2019 03:46

I drop in on a regular basis, to read Van's posts and to check the numbers. Amazing, but there is never less than 15-20 people here and more often than not, 50 - 100. They don't post, but they do read!

I keep the forums going because there is a ton of interesting and valuable material here, that I deliberately haven't cleaned out or have I deleted. Although there is sufficient content in Van's forum alone to make a visit interesting, doing a search on a subject will bring up enough reading material to keep most people busy.

Interests go in cycles and as F.B. and the other social media outlets get more popular and more active, and stuffed with more ads and bullshit, there may be a return to smaller, more focused ways to communicate and interact . . . like the Forums. And when that happens, the forums will still be here. And hopefully we will be here as well!

I guess we were not since he took his game elsewhere! It takes two to tango as they say, one person going head to head is just banging his head against a wall. :D

I for one appreciate you keeping these forums going, their value is immense. I cannot count the number of times I have done a google search on some martial art topic and at least one thread in these forums comes up in the results.
