Uechi Ryu Magazine Articles

Post by Glenn »

Some may recall that over a decade ago I posted in this forum a list of print magazine articles that were either 1) about some aspect of Uechi Ryu, 2) written by Uechi Ryu stylists, or 3) interviews with Uechi Ryu stylists, and I updated it at least once but it has not been further updated for around a decade. For some reason I cannot locate that list now, so I am re-posting it here with a few added articles to bring it up to date. Needless to say, with the demise of most martial arts magazines there have not been as many Uechi Ryu related articles over the past decade, although I am pleased to see the re-birth of Bugeisha, and the article about George that was in a recent issue. The list currently contains 79 published print articles:

Hi Glenn:
Many thanks for the forums update on Uechi articles in magazines. Hopefully you will continue visiting us here and help to revitalize the forums. I personally believe there will be slow rebuilding of this site as more and more people are leaving other social media.

Hi George! I definitely have not given up on these forums. However regarding magazines, have you heard the Bugeisha magazine founder and executive editor Angel Lemus died this week? I interacted with him occasionally on the Cyberdojo Yahoo Group back in the 1990s/2000s but I imagine you knew him better due at least to the articles you wrote for Bugeisha.

Hi Glenn:
Angel Lemus's death was completely unexpected. I've been attempting, unsuccessfully, to find out the cause of death. Let me know if you find out anything.

BTW, my son Erik, is taking on the job of running the Forums, along with Cecelia. I'll be spreading the word with newsletters and postings to social media. I spent a few hours scanning the posts and topics here and believe there will be a returning of past participants and newbies. Hope to see more of you and tons of the "old" guard, who will be wondering. . . "why the hell did I move to Facebook???"

George

Ric Martin, listed in one of the Uechi Ryu Magazine articles (Black Belt, June 1983), has an exceptional career. He’s the top instructor, out of 15, for the Authentic Martial Arts instructor team. He has over 45 years of martial arts experience, earning an eighth degree Blackbelt. Before Authentic Martial Arts, he was the master instructor and owner of the Okinawan Karate School of Largo.

He’s also an Okinawan Karate World Champion, the first American to win the championship after defeating five opponents in a competition hosting 45 fighters from seven nations in Okinawan. At six feet and 175 pounds, Martin managed to defeat the massive six feet, 6 inches tall, 215 pound, two-time defending champion Karl Laysse in the final bout on December 11, 1994. Karl’s from Australia, the country where a 72 year old man had driven off a charging crocodile, jaws of death wide opened, with a frying pan. Even tigers are reluctant to confront these creatures. Master Karl Laysse is the only non-Asian competitor who managed to earn a more impressive championship record than Ric Martin. Ric competed at the prestigious All Okinawan Karate Championship Series for 13 years, the longest so far.

He learned from the great Master Toshiyuki Itokazu (Tosh), from Okinawa, Japan, and greatly admire him as the ultimate martial arts mentor, putting his all for growing his students. Tosh was born in 7/23/1947 and passed away at 4/15/1985 at less than 38 years. Tosh has a reputation of body conditioning. “When he runs into the door frame, the door frame said———‘OUCH!’” (George Mattson)
