Basic exercise classes that is scheduled daily on Mattson On-line Academy of Uechi-Ryu karate has squats. European Journal of Preventive
Cardiology has done a scientific paper titled "Ability to sit and rise from the floor as a predictor of all-cause mortality" People able to sit and rise from a floor without needing to use their hands for support has a lower mortality rate. They live long and prosper.

For most healthy people squatting should not cause knee pain. Unfortunately, knee pain torment many people trying to do squats. Healthline has a great article on dealing with issues:

One common cause of knee pain is sitting too much. It may be from poor posture, poor sitting posture and leg positioning, or simply not moving around.
